I am looking or an affordable shooting mat, i am a big guy not tall at 5'11. the one place i will try to shoot at this year has no bench, i have not asked if i can build one yet. I like shooting prone the reason for the way i built my 308, i cover a lot of area when on the ground. I would like to see whats out there for shooting mats that are large but cheap.

I am certain there are other things repurposed for mats i would not mind if it work good. any tips would be appreciated thanks. troy.

Horse stall mat from a farm supply store might work; how big are you talking about?

That size would be way to heavy as well. Sam's and Costco carry foam mats that interlock so you can make them square or rectangular; might take two packs to make it that large, but it would be light enough. One side is black, the other different colors

i don't need to pack them far i shoot close to my vehicle where this property is.

I always use a tarp and cover more ground than I need because ticks carrying Lyme disease are prevalent here.
ya i need to make a canvas trap makes less noise. always on the look out for them buggers. one reason i dont shoot from spring to fall at my buddys. he is in the sandy area by the neversink, u can see them jumping and that's not a joke.

Go to a carpet store, may be able to get an off cut or remenant. May even e able to use a piece of customer removed/used carpet. Pay to have them hem the edges so it won 't keep unraveling. Continue to use the oversize tarp and spray the tarp with appropriate bug spray.

that's a good idea.

Even Home Depot or Lowes might have carpet like that as well. I just looked up a 3/4" 10'x10' stall mat; it weighs 420# (of course it is designed to stand up to horses that weigh 1000# and up.)

i have a huge carpet warehouse down the road they may have them big rolls that are about empty. 420# that's a work out to move lol.

If you go the carpet route, check out industrial carpet. It is more common as carpet tiles, but may not be as heavy since it tends to be less plush.

Something else to consider is an outdoor exercise mat or yoga mat. You can get large ones for less than $100. Just make sure you look at ones made for use with shoes since they tend to be more durable. You could always opt for a smaller yoga mat and cover it with an outdoor sport/picnic blanket.

Harbor freight anti fatigue mats are $9 for a set of 4 interlocking tiles of 1/2 inch thick neoprene. Cushions, insulates you from the ground, and is light weight. They cut to a custom size with a standard utility knife.

Thanks for the idea.
I need to check that out as well.
My carpet roll/mat feels a bit thin on rough ground. Still fine for concrete though.
