ROY — One man is dead and a police officer is in the hospital after a Sunday-night shootout.
Roy Police officer Don Ponton was shot in the upper thigh late Sunday while looking for a robbery suspect in Ogden with several other officers. Ponton and Roy Police officer Adam Madsen returned fire after Ponton was shot in an ambush-like attack, killing a man.
Authorities identified the man as Robert Apodaca, 30. His most recently listed address was in West Valley City.
"The officer is doing well," said Roy Police Chief Greg Whinham. "He is expected to have a complete and full recovery."
The shootout happened about 10 p.m. Sunday in an alley near 315 Patterson in Ogden. The entire scenario began an hour earlier in Roy.
A car was stolen near 2400 West and 4950 South in Roy at 8:53 p.m., Whinham said. At 9:16 p.m. the Tesoro near 1900 West and 4800 South in Roy was robbed.
Twelve minutes later, a Weber County Sheriff's deputy spotted the stolen vehicle on U-79. The driver matched the description of the person who robbed the Tesoro, Whinham said. Following a chase, the vehicle crashed through the front of a business near 30th and Grant in Ogden, and the driver ran.
Officers from Weber County, Roy and Ogden set up a containmen. Madsen and Ponton checked an alley near several homes. Whinham said the suspect was crouched down and ambushed the officers. He was able to fire a shot from a .380-caliber automatic handgun before the officers saw him, Whinham said.
"There was no warning," Whinham said.
The bullet entered Ponton's upper right thigh and lodged in his lower back, barely missing a kidney, Whinham said. Ponton cried out that he had been hit but was able to return fire as he retreated, Whinham said. Madsen also fired as he helped his colleague to safety.

Whinham did not know Monday how many shots were fired. Neighbors in the area said they heard five to six shots. It is believed the man fired only once, Whinham said. It was not known Monday which officer or if both shot the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
"This is an emotional time for the officers and their families," Whinham said. "It's a good day because our officers are all alive and will fully recover."
