Been thinking about a S&W 69. Rather a 696, or even a 624 but cha-ching! Nope, not to bang around on a tractor seat. So I've been perusing the usual on-line vendors to try to get a sense of what I should pay - always buy local but like to know what doing so really costs. Anyway, here's the stock photo of a purported 2-3/4" 69 that's on Bud's site and several other vendors on Gunbroker. Looks like a photoshopped 4" to me: ejector rod's too short, and lettering's in the same place relative to relative to the muzzle as the 4. Curious me thinks (Obviously too much time on my hands with the lockdown)

S&W's 2 3/4 on their site looks nothing like it.

Pretty hinky unless it's some sort of *Special* like my never listed "Davidson's Special" Model 66 is.

Even then, I don't get why the lettering would be spaced like that or why it would have that strangely short ejector lug.

In any case, I certainly wouldn't pop for one without answers.

Todd.

I've seen a number of ads on Armslist with a white background where the piece just doesn't look right. Never thought about them being photo shopped. I guess the scammers have that figured out too

What I don't get is where so many - at least six I've counted - got what appears to be the same pic. I have no doubt that a 2-3/4 ordered from Buds would be real thing. An early S&W mockup for advertising?

Like your gun, yes? Obviously, given my preferred alternatives, it would be Spl only

I believe that’s a model of the super secret “eject assist” model. The ejector rod only needs to be one inch longer than the cylinder. The ejector has a spring action that engages as the cylinder is cycled around for each shot and once the sixth round is fired and the cylinder is opened it only takes a small bump to engage the “eject assist ejector” and the empty brass is forcefully ejected via spring action.
Eye protection is a must. The nice thing about this set up is you also get to feel like you’re at the range with your autoloader...chasing brass, getting that all important back stretching done as you shoot and collect your brass for reloading.
Wonderful firearm! Wonderful engineering!  :p

If you are wanting a Smith and Wesson.44 Special, you should consider holding out for a 624. I bought one off Gunbroker a few years ago. It has become one of my favorites. I have a 629, but I mostly shot specials out of it. The 624 is a bit lighter, not much, but it is noticeable. There is just something about that tapered barrel to me. It looks good feels good and is very nice to shoot. I am in the process of getting a set of Culina grips, made of black and white ebony for it now. They should be ready in about 2-3 weeks. I will post some pictures when I get them. I have looked at the 696 and it just didn’t appeal to me. No S&W with the lock does. I try to find prelock guns. There is nothing wrong with them. They say they are better than the older ones. I am just old school and that hole just doesn’t belong there. I do own one with the lock, a model 21. I will use it for a trade when something comes along. The older Smiths just have a different feel. Give the 624 a look, I bet you would be very pleased with one.

this is the photo of mine that was on Gunbroker.

I'm trying to figure out why the 4" 69 would have a shorter ejector rod than the 2-3/4"?

Haven't come up with an answer yet!

Dave

The 624 is a lot like my 629 Mountain Gun.., with the 629 having a slightly longer cylinder of course.
It’s no lightweight, but it’s a bit easier to tote than the full lug 629’s.

The 69 is about the perfect .44 Spl sized gun, I wish that they would make a “special “ run in .44 Spl only :)

Stay safe.

In .44 Mag can't see dropping below 4" and 36-40 .oz. This 1989 Mountain Revolver is IT for me and I will allways have it near to my heart :)

When I was younger, I wanted moarrrr barrel... on everything, but, as they say, everything shrinks with age. I find the 4" barrel almost ideal on pretty much everything... including 1911's. That is not to say there isn't a place for longer barrels... of course, and for that matter, shorter barrels for special applications. I just have no purpose for a large-frame Magnum with a barrel shorter than 4", and, to quote Mr Spock... 'It's illogical.' Now, what some are suggesting... a cartridge like the .44SPC or the nebulous .41SPC, in a Special-sized cylinder, in a medium-frame pistol... you have my attention. Just my opinion; that and a $1.50 will get you a cup of coffee at 7-Eleven.

My 2 4" Smith .41's... a 57 and a 58. I would not want those on an L-frame...

Ditto that. I want a 44 spl not a mag, and am not that enamored of the idea of dealing with a crud ring in the cylinder. Where I am, if I need more than a Skeeter load, its gonna have long barrel and a buttstock. I've got a Bisley Spl Flattop, but would like a DA to accompany it. Short of stealing a 696 - which I would much prefer - the 69 looks like the closest thing I will...afford.

You can load the mag to Spl loads in a mag case if the ring is an issue, or just shoot specials in it and clean it out every once in a while like I do. (I shoot a lot of .38 Spl in my .357 Mags and .44 Spl in my .44 Mags...My .41 I load up or down as I want in the full length case because I don't want to mess with .41 Spl.) It's not too annoying to clean them when I'm done shooting a lot through them.

My only dedicated .44 Spl is a 5-shot GP 100, the 3" version. It, too is a fairly heavy gun because the Ruger has the full lug barrel and a long-ish grip rather than a half-lug one and boot grips. It's easier to hold on to, but it's not a CCW-sized gun like some of the other .44's are (Charter, etc.)

Good luck with your quest!

Stay safe.
