I have shortened the hogue shotgun and rifle stocks many times. Here's the trick:
Remove the pad, fill the stock with epoxy (bondo works fine, too) and let it set up. Then mark the place you wish to cut by wrapping the stock in masking tape, and making your line on that. If you have a bandsaw, it's REALLY easy, but I don't, and used a folding saw. When it's cut, measure the rear of the stock, and go on Pach-mayr's website and get a pad pre-fit for the dimensions of your cut. When you get it, mark the holes, drill, and add screws. Done. Perfect fit, and costs only whatever the recoil pad goes for. It won't matter much what kind of pad you get for the 10/22, but on the 870, the pad makes a difference.
