The smell of paper shells. Remember picking them up on the ditch bank on my dads farm. People would hunt ducks there. I was too young to hunt but dearly loved to pick up those paper shells. There was nothing like that smell either. I still remember it vividly 60 years ago.
It's like crack, isn't it? I shot AA's or Peters Blue Magics back in the late 70's early 80's when I was in several Trap leagues at a couple clubs. It's what my Dad bought and loaded for his trap (and like kalielkslayer, pheasant and duck) loads. AA, WAA-12 1 1/8 over 700-x for trap, AA, AA Red wads, 1 1/4 (pheasant) or 1 1/2 (waterfowl) of #5 Lubaloy over 800-X, WW572, or Blue Dot for the game loads.
I got back into Trap and pheasant hunting about 6 years ago, and dug the old MEC 600 I'd learned on back in '72 (Dad gave it to me when he moved to TX in '96, and it sat dormant for another 22 years) and started to do my research. Bought a Lyman's Shotshell Manual, and decided that again, AA's and Remington STS, which replaced the Premier, which replaced the Blue Magic. I load mostly those though I have tried the Remington Gun CLubs-they have stuck in my Ljutic and Ithaca trap guns, but run through my Remington 1100 and 870 fine.
Anyhoo, back to the lovely scent of a spent Federal paper hull. My best friend back then and his whole family loaded Federal Champion paper hulls with Red Dot, 12S3's and 1 1/8, plus the club I worked at sold the factory ones, so I got to smell them every day I worked. They should make a perfume out of it. No wonder I liked girls that shot Trap back then!
