I know i am living in the past but i love it here. Back in the 60's i loaded a lot of paper hulls with a Lee wack a mole which i still have. I also have a lot of lo brass paper hulls. Back in the day i used Hercules red under a 1/2 in. nitro card with 50# wad pressure and a 5/8 " fiber filler wad (2) plus 1 1/8 oz # 71/2 shot. Are the wads and nitro cards still available and from whom?

Yes, you can still get these from Ballistic Products Inc. I used to load shells as such from a large stash gifted to me by an old friend until I ran out of the paper hulls. The fiber and card loads didn't work so well in modern plastic hulls. I loved the naked card and shot loads for short range upland game.

Many thanks for the info. Did a lot of trap back in the day with a Remington Sportsman 58 with a factory installed Polychoke/ Now shooting a 1965 Victor Sarasquata side by side 12 Ga. that i bought new in 65. Haven't shot the d/b in 45 years.

I was a decade behind you. When I was a pre-teen I tried my Dad’s stuff; paper cases, nitro cards, etc. For my 12th BD (1972) he bought me a MEC 600 Jr as a BD gift.

It was AA cases, red or white Win wads, Win 540 or Win 571 for powder and Win 209s.

I loaded everything from 1 1/8- 1 1/2 oz loads for years.

Then the “non-toxic” age began! I still loaded lead for pheasants, then later chukar.

Then life got busy and the $$$ was more plentiful so for years I just bought factory.

Then when heavier shot became available, I got into loading heavyshot with the thick wads, tyvex wraps, overcards.

Ballistic Products got me hooked. Next thing I knew I was using seals under my was to prevent gas from escaping and gaining velocity. Overshot cards on lead loads for a better crimp, speciality wads for various purposes.

Then life got busy again.

Just getting back to it.

Plastic shells and one piece AA or PP wads are a piece of cake compared to all that was needed for wads in paper shells. However, the smell of a freshly shot paper shell was a real high compared to a plastic shell which is pretty bland. The high is definitely missed.

The smell of paper shells. Remember picking them up on the ditch bank on my dads farm. People would hunt ducks there. I was too young to hunt but dearly loved to pick up those paper shells. There was nothing like that smell either. I still remember it vividly 60 years ago.

Jumping in here, not sure if this is best thread. I am trying to find a replacement for the One Purple PC wad to use with red dot in 1 oz loads, preferably Win 209 Primer/STS hulls. I found some reloading data for Alliant powders and they appear to suggest a "Rem R12L" for this configuration...but I am seeing remarks that this particular wad is also out of production. Is that right? Anyone encounter this and if so, find a solution? THANKS

It's like crack, isn't it? I shot AA's or Peters Blue Magics back in the late 70's early 80's when I was in several Trap leagues at a couple clubs. It's what my Dad bought and loaded for his trap (and like kalielkslayer, pheasant and duck) loads. AA, WAA-12 1 1/8 over 700-x for trap, AA, AA Red wads, 1 1/4 (pheasant) or 1 1/2 (waterfowl) of #5 Lubaloy over 800-X, WW572, or Blue Dot for the game loads.
I got back into Trap and pheasant hunting about 6 years ago, and dug the old MEC 600 I'd learned on back in '72 (Dad gave it to me when he moved to TX in '96, and it sat dormant for another 22 years) and started to do my research. Bought a Lyman's Shotshell Manual, and decided that again, AA's and Remington STS, which replaced the Premier, which replaced the Blue Magic. I load mostly those though I have tried the Remington Gun CLubs-they have stuck in my Ljutic and Ithaca trap guns, but run through my Remington 1100 and 870 fine.

Anyhoo, back to the lovely scent of a spent Federal paper hull. My best friend back then and his whole family loaded Federal Champion paper hulls with Red Dot, 12S3's and 1 1/8, plus the club I worked at sold the factory ones, so I got to smell them every day I worked. They should make a perfume out of it. No wonder I liked girls that shot Trap back then!
