Well, I was only out on the back deck, using the railing to steady the rifle, but all in all it shoots pretty good... the target was about 45 feet out.

People have told me that they are fun to shoot... And I was a tad scketpal, however, turns out they were right! :D This thing is a blast. What's more is that it was only $129; That's a lot of gun for that money!

Congratulations. The first gun I ever purchased was a Chinese SKS years ago when the were plentiful and cheaper. I've shot and cleaned that thing many times since and loved every session. Great gun.

My Yugo SKS does pretty decent groups at 100 yards with Silver Bear. Haven't tried any other ammo in it.

I haven't been able to get my SAR-1 to hit paper at that distance yet.

Nice shooting Nick, but how was it in the reliability department? So far my Yugos have been 100%

Wondernine, I can hit the paper with my SAR-1 at 100 yards, but you wouldn't be able to call it a "group". The rounds are pretty much spread out all over the paper.

Nice shooting Nick

Thanks; I know that I can do better with it, once I get both better situated, and more comfortable with the rifle. Does seem to shoot a tad low… Me thinks that if I move the slider on the rear sight a notch toward the muzzle it should bring the group up, or is that the other way?

Absolutely flawless. :) In no part of loading or firing have I encountered any problem or hiccup of any kind. To be honest, I expected there would be a few flaws… however beyond some cosmetics, it is flawless.

I'm only familiar with Wolf. Is Silver Bear like premium or hunting rounds?

Wow... They were cheaper? Were they giving them away? :p

Thanks all

(and thanks to those who convienced me to buy it... )

My rear sight is forward

about 3 notches at 50 yd targets. My typical alignment is the top of front and rear sight at equal height and bottom of target apple on top of the front sight. All is normal:D

Chineses SKS

Congratulations on your purchase Nick, the SKS is a great rifle and will not dissapoint you I think. Those Yugos are the best value on the market right now. You can't beat a battle worthy rifle thats powerful cheap, and uttery reliable. Silver Bear ammo is Russian surplus like Wolf, in fact, it wouldn't suprise me if Silver Bear, Brown Bear and Wolf were made in the same factory. With my chinese SKS I can usually group around 3" at 100 yards at the bench and about 5-7" off-hand. I probably shouldn't be telling you this since there is a shortage right now but Barnaul 7.62X39 is better than the Wolf. It's made at a different factory in Russia and is more powerful and consistant than just about any other 7.62X39 I've ever fired. Plus, it's basically the same price, like $1.89 for a box of 20  at Midway . But hey if you're just blastin around who cares! That's the whole reason to get one right!

I'm still cleaning the cosmo out of my new Yugo. I've had 2 other SKSs though, and they are fantastic rifles! You can shoot these things all day and not get tired of it.

Just picked up a Yugo today myself!

Its pretty clean of cosmoline, but isn't there some warning about the firing pin being free to move?

It looks kinda slow moving on mine, obviously I haven't shot it yet....

...isn't there some warning about the firing pin being free to move?

greyhound: There sure is. Take the bolt out of your rifle and shake it. The firing pin should rattle... should be completely loose in the bolt. If not, don't shoot the rifle. Soak the whole assembly in solvent and pull the bolt out and skake often. Once it's completely loose blow it dry, recheck to make sure it's still loose, and reassemble.

Sticky firing pins are probably the number one problem with SKS rifles... easy to fix but definitely something you want to check/fix. Otherwise you'll find those ten rounds headed downrange in a hurry (can you say "SLAMFIRE"?).

Great rifles... cheap to buy... cheap to feed... reliable... Enjoy!

PAshooter - thanks!

I did a quick breakdown and sprayed Gunscrubber all over and inside the bolt, it moves freely temporarily but I am pretty sure the cosmo will harden.

I tried to bang the firing pin retainer out per: Surplus Rifles.com but its stuck hard and fast. Guess I will have to soak it overnight but for now I just wanted to practice putting back together.

How the heck did that greanade launcer work, anyway? Did the gas pressure launch the grenade somehow?

Yup - gas pressure from a blank round. That's what the valve is for... turns the rifle into a single shot - sending all the gas down the barrel to launch the grenade.

Sounds like you're on the right track, greyhound. Give us a range report when you take her out for a spin.
