I live in Chicago, which has an AWB prohibiting possession of semi-auto shotguns with a fixed magazine capacity in excess of five rounds (that’s just one of a list of features, but the only one relevant to my question.). At some point, I would like to get an FN SLP, which has a capacity of six rounds. Would plugging the magazine to 5 rounds be sufficient? If not, would there be a more permanent mod that might be (have a gunsmith dimple the mag tube or something?). Thanks in advance.

The LAST place I would ask is the PD. Find a pro-gun lawyer and ask them. Maybe, IF the plug was permanent, you might be OK, but then you have negated a good reason for owning one.

Thanks. I can deal with one round fewer. Other options would be a Beretta 1301 Tactical or Benelli M2 Tactical, which both have 5 round capacity, and therefore comply with the restriction. I prefer the FN SLP, hence the question.

This is Chicago, on of the most anti - rights locations in the US, and equipped with a private firearms owner hating police force. I highly recommend that you get something that factory stock meets the requirements, don't leave them any window to come after you. Just a friendly suggestion. Oh, and while I'm barbecuing outside this winter, I'll be thinking of you - spent winter in Chicago in 86-87, will NEVER do that again.

I spent two LONG winters in North Dakota; and folks wonder why I prefer Florida........

You will likely never get a straight answer on this in Chicago, if modding the shotgun to limit the round count is acceptable. Can it be ordered from the factory w/ a reduced capacity tube? That would probably be the best bet. When the registry was intact you would have received an OK by virtue of it having been approved at that time. That might be the only modestly positive thing to say about the now-defunct registry.

How will OP even get one? Will a store in chicsgo be able to order him one and sell it to him? If he orders it online, will an FFL be able to legally transfer it to him withingnrhe city limits. Or if the FFL is elsewhere in the state, will they be able to transfer it to someone who lives in Chicago?

You can go to a gun store in the suburbs or order online and ship to an FFL. It’s fairly easy. They’re not responsible for knowing all the ins and outs of the Chicago municipal code. If you bought from a store with a gunsmith you could have the capacity limited before taking possession.

Okay. That’s what I was wondering.

A Chicago resident with an IL FOID can purchase any gun lawful in the state of IL at any gun store in the state same as any other citizen. Whether or not it is legal to have in Chicago doesn't matter. The onus to comply with local law falls on the resident, not the gun store. And a Chicago resident might plausibly be purchasing a weapon or accessory not lawful at that home residence for lawful use/storage elsewhere. This said, I'm not a lawyer but I think this is a pretty settled law at this point. Now, if we get a new state-level dealer license under a new governor, this all might change as I could see language stipulating dealer compliance with sales to residents of areas with more-restrictive laws. Illinois is always a crap shoot with the RKBA.

Bring a shotgun and go north to Northbrook; one of the finest sporting clay venues in the country

Be careful with handguns in Chicago.....outlying burbs are one thing, but Cook County is not a nice place for gun folks

We will be in Naperville. I checked policies related to visitors with a Texas carry permit. My brother has obtained an FOID. We are good for transporting the pistols to a commercial range and using them there. Thanks for the concern and advice.

The police department is one of the worst places to get information about gun laws, almost as bad as gun stores.
I suppose that is true in Chicago. Having lived in a free society all my life I sometimes forget that my good neighbors to the east languish under the rule of a police state.

Nothing to do with it being Chicago. I have no experience there. Police officers seldom know the smaller nuances of firearms laws, regardless whether they're in Chicago or small town Iowa.
