What are the pros and cons of different types of shotguns sights?

IE: Ghost ring sights, rifle sighs, bead sights, etc.

What is the shotgun being used for?

Shotguns are pointed - not aimed.

Custom Competition Shotguns, to fit a shooter, will often NOT have any beads at all on purpose.

I learned to shoot shotguns, with no beads.
I still teach folks to shoot shotguns, with no beads.
I shoot from low gun (no pre-mounted)

Gun fit to shooter plus correct basic fundamentals, are that important.

Single bead on a vent rib:
1. Prevent Canting of the pre-mounted shotgun.
1 a. Dissipate any heat waves
1 b. Simple and effective single sighting plane for stationary targets that "may" be presented.

Single Bead with smaller mid bead.

2. See above :
2a. Improved, fast, sighting plane for stationary targets that "may" be presented.

Here is the deal. it is really rare a target, or a shooter is not moving.
Matter of Training for Task.
I do very well with mid beads for fast scooting, moving, and slug use.

I learned with a plain barrel and no beads or sight system, and continue to shoot like this, including slugs.
If matters get serious, I want to make hits even if all the beads, sights are busted up and off the gun.

Rifle sights are great for Deer and Turkey and similar game.
Best kept secret is a short smooth-bore barrel with rifle sights
as comes with many Combos [two barrels, one longer , one shorter]

This is all know.
I focus only on the leading edge of target...and I do not want anything to distract my focus.
Hi-vis, distracts the living daylights out of me.
Ghost Rings, I have no idea when the last I held a shotgun with them
Optics, Distracts , affects the way I use a shotgun and I'll be darned if want to be dependent on batteries.

I shoot slugs with plain barrel shotguns, no beads , at low 7, rabbit targets, Tueller drills, whatever.
I do so from port up, port down, back up over my head...

I really do not like getting cut up by guns either, I hate sighs, beads curb feelers and fuzzy dice that cut me.

Less is more, smooth is fast and shooting comes from within...JMP

One of my shotguns has a single lucite-type bead on it. The other has two beads. To be quite honest, I don't pay much attention to them. A raised rib is IMHO more important.

Rifle sights with slugs are very good.
Aperture, enlarged , like a mini ghost ring work very good too.
Lasers work.

I am the odd man out around here.

What is one going to do with a shotgun?
What is the environment(s) a shotgun is going to used in?
Experience, level of skill of user?
Physical attributes of user?
[Young with great eyes, or wimpy eyes?
Older with failing eyes?
Any injuries limiting shooting?]

I like to shoot moving targets. I have my druthers on shotguns, how set up and loadngs.
. I also have practiced shooting from the bed of a moving p/u truck.
This replicates having to extract a person down, a stalled vehicle, arriving into/evading a bad area...etc.

Others may be in deer stand in a shotgun only zone.
Perhaps they prefer to hunt driven deer...in a shotgun only zone.

Example.
English Straight Stocked guns, with 21"-23" barrels, make great slug guns.
Enough weight forward allowing for a smooth mounting of gun to face, smooth swing, follow through and with gun fit, fitting shooter with English stock, the perceived recoil is less.
Recoil is going where it is supposed to be for one - due to gun fit, second, hand positioning assists with not only handling ,the recoil going more straight back is "less perceived".

One has to take into account, the shooter has LOTs of trigger time, ingrained correct basic fundamentals, and environments can be rural to urban.

Art & Science.

Given sufficient shotgun experience, sights won't necessarily make a lot of difference one way or the other. There are some advantages and disadvantages to the different sighting systems for shotguns of course, but hand a good shotgunner most any sort of shotgun and that shooter will get hits with it as a rule.

The best sighting system for any shotgun is to put it in the hands of a good shotgunner. You want to get hits with a shotgun with ANY sighting system- get to be a good shotgunner. Software (the shooter) trumps hardware (sights) every time.

Bead sights are basic shotgun fare, but an truly experienced shooter can get along without even a bead- lots do it every day. Shotguns point naturally, they have evolved over hundreds of years of use to do just that. Doing things to a shotgun that get in the way of its natural function are generally not going to be helpful to the shooter. Shotgun fit is critical, beyond that a lot can be dispensed with. The shotgunner's eye is the rear sight, the stock is the sighting system if it places the shooter's eye in the proper position every time the gun is shouldered. It really is that simple- just like making money in the stock market is simple, just buy low and sell high 8^).

Rifle type sights on the barrel are offered on lots of 'slug' barrels. They can be helpful in aiming slugs as opposed to directing patterns of small shot at fleeting targets. The good thing about rifle sights on the barrel is that when you swap barrels for wingshooting/claybird games/small game, the sights go away completely and do not obstruct your view.

I like ghost ring sights on a defensive shotgun, some other folks don't. My defensive shotgun is a dedicated gun for that purpose alone, though it would serve capably as a large game hunting gun if needed in a shotgun-only environment. Since there won't be any barrel swapping going on with that gun, the receiver mounted rear sight is not an issue. Aperture sights are faster than open sights once you get used to them and a receiver mounted rear sight extends the sight radius enough to be helpful.

Some folks like glass on a shotgun for specialized purposes- turkey hunting or deer hunting. I never cared for optical sights on shotguns, OPMMV.

That about covers it I think- hth,
