Okay Gang, I've been a little swamped at work over the last few days with losing three days to inclement weather and the power being out at my office last week, but I'm getting caught up, and it looks like by the tail end of this week, I should be able to make my way down to my favorite FFL and pick up the P30L that's waiting for me. The issue is, I'm about out of safe space at home so I'm considering letting a pistol go in trade toward the P30L to 1) slightly offset a bit of the cost, and more importantly, 2) free up some space for the new gun and mags. So the two that I'm thinking about parting ways with are both guns that are seldom carried.

One pistol I'm considering moving is my Sig Sauer P245 which I like because it's a German made pistol complete with the folded steel slide and welded on nose. The issue with this gun is I don't shoot it particularly well as I haven't spent a lot of range time with it figuring out POA and POI. The gun is dead nuts reliable from what I've seen of it though. This pistol was purchased with the intent to be something of a project gun and one that I could carry on those occasions where my typical daily carried P229 is a little too chunky for the day's attire (though I also have a Walther PPS that fills that niche too). I do really like the P245 as it's in outstanding shape and it feels very natural in my hand as do all Sigs. I just don't spend much time with it, and thus don't shoot it particularly well because of that since most of my .45 shooting time is devoted to 1911s.

The second Pistol that I'm thinking about moving along is my Gen 4 Glock 19 which I shoot ALMOST as well as my P229 since I did carry that gun prior to getting the P229. That said, since getting the P229, I've not carried the Glock once and I now rarely shoot the gun at the range. Lately, however, I have been using it as a loaner gun for the girl friend who has decided she wants to get into shooting. This gun, like the P245 has been totally reliable and I actually do know the POA/POI relationship for this particular piece. Aside from the few occasions where it gets taken out as a loaner gun, it just sits in the safe and collects dust.

So now, which gun, if either of the two, should be moved along?

Pick up the HK, Shoot it and see you can live with it first.
You keep talking about carry guns, but the 30l isn't exactly a svelte petite carry gun...

Trust me, I know the P30L isn't a small carry gun. That said, it's dimensions put it at the same size as my Sig P226's as near as makes no difference, but the P30L comes in a good bit lighter. I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that I'll be able to carry the P30L more easily than I can carry my P226's or P229. After all, the P30L is approximately the same height as the P226 and P229 and it's about six and a half ounces lighter.

As you know, it's totally your call. But - based on the fact that I am at a spot where I have more handguns than storage space, I'm gonna be thinning out the herd myself. I have a couple of "collections" that I'll keep (9mm classics, .22 plinkers, etc.) but I need to streamline my defensive handgun selection to the best set.

With that said, keep the Glock as a loaner or intro gun for new shooters (those folks will be most likely to buy a modern polymer striker fired gun anyway), and sell the P245 AFTER you've had a chance to use your new purchase and decide to keep it.

Get another safe, give your girlfriend the Glock 19 (provided you think she really wants to it, shoot the SIG P245 more, and enjoy your new HK P30L.

Shoot them all head-to-head and give it some deep thought.

I'd be inclined to dump the Glock as it's by far the easiest to replace.

Or, buy another safe and look forward to running out of room in it too!

Maybe a small quick access bedside type safe that holds just one or two pistols and deem that your girlfriend's. I need at least one of those type of safes myself.

I have never owned or shot a German-made Sig, and I would not ordinarily suggest selling off a G19. That said, the G19 is much more easily replaced if you decide that selling was a mistake. Keep them both if possible. If not, sell the G19.

I voted to dump the 245. You don't shoot it well, so why have it. And you shouldn't dump the G19 because that might not go over with the girlfriend....assuming she's a keeper.

My girlfriend don't live together...yet. That being said, there's not the typical spouse/girlfriend complaint of "why do you need that many? They all do the same thing." Having said that, I was myself leaning a little more toward parting with the Glock as the P245 isn't easily replaced regardless of the fact that I don't shoot it as well as other things in my collection. I assume that it is like any other gun, if I do my part and put in the trigger time, I'll come to shoot it just fine. I really don't care for Glocks, but I forced myself to put in the time with my current 19 and as it turns out, I can shoot Glocks pretty well now. Do I shoot other things better, absolutely, but point is, with a little dedicated range time, I can become proficient with anything.

All that in the book, I'd love to have a way to keep all of the above, so moving a pistol or two to my office safe is a strong contender, especially since I don't really NEED to offset the cost of the HK.

I dump guns "I don't shoot particularily well". If I don't shoot it well and don't shoot it often, I dump it for something I shoot well and often (usually another 1911 in my case).

So I would dump the 245.

Well here's my view on things and what I would do. First of all I don't like getting rid of reliable guns that I shoot well and that fit a role. Every time I do that I regret it, so that's never happening again because I find myself buying the gun over again later or at least thinking about buying the gun again later which makes no sense. Second, glocks are many things but safe queens aren't one of those things. If you're not going to shoot a glock I'd say let it go, especially the most popular glock made (g19) since you will have no problem unloading it to a buyer who really wants one. The g19 is the one gun that will always be available, unless another gun scare happens which changes the whole dynamics of this whole thread. Third, I'm not a collector of firearms I'm more of a enthusiast or user if you will so guns I don't shoot well are on the first thing smoking out of town after I've given the effort to make it work for me. Keeping a gun in a safe that I don't shoot well and don't use and has no sentimental value to me doesn't fit my personality, but that's just me. Being a German sig changes things a bit though if that kind of thing matters to you. I'd probably trade it in on a p220 carry that I would probably shoot better, shoot more, and carry sometimes since it's slightly smaller than a p226 or p30L. After all the p245 was not meant to be a safe queen either. Fourth and probably the most important is it's time to expand and get a new safe because you're going to find yourself in this same exact predicament when another gun comes along that tickles your fancy. Either sell your safe and upgrade to larger one or buy another safe all together. I'm almost to the point where I need another safe. I've come to the realization that buying a nice large safe even though they get pricey is a necessary evil. There you go, clear as mud lol

Just what I did, take it or leave it. Put your Glock in a grab-and-go bag, locked cocked and loaded. Add 5 loaded magazines , flashlight, knife and med supplies and a tourniquet. Keep that secured on your vehicle. Then see if you want a 3rd Sig. Seriously.

I actually may keep the Sig for the time being and keep an eye out for a German or West German P228 in like condition (I may be holding out for a while on one of those though).

I vote for dumping the Glock for several reasons;
1. There are plenty of them on the market so getting another is not a issue.
2. Glocks are a old, somewhat dated design. There are many other plastic frame handguns with different shape grip frames, sights and safety features such as a thumb safety.
3. Modular handguns are coming onto the market with SIGP320 and Beretta APX leading the way. Inexpensive frames with different shapes, sizes and colors will be on the market soon.

Personally the main pro reason for having a Glock 19 is for if the stuff hits the fan collapse of the country.

Well, a decision has been made. I'm keeping both the Sig and the Glock 19 (for now) and adding the P30L which I'm picking up today...just two weeks after I got the confirmation that it was in. Thanks work schedule. But now that the trial calendar is calmed down until about mid-June, I'll have a few opportunities this week to get it to the range so that I can get acclimated to it ;)

Be aware of any grip angle differences between the pistols. Some bother people, others don't. Enjoy, good shooting!

Well, I had a chance to grab my new P30L on my lunch break today. Can't wait to get it out to the range. When talking to my FFL, he mentioned that keeping the P245 would be advisable, even if I don't shoot it often for the simple fact that they're becoming harder and harder to come by. I have no problem moving it off to my office safe since it's not something that I shoot often anyway.

On that note, the difference in grip angles doesn't bother me as much as it used to, but I will say, I am much more comfortable with a handgun that has an angle more like a 1911, Sig or Browning HP, hence my preference for carrying a P229 or 1911.
