DA' Old Fuff has tried just about every combination of iron sight there is. I do like gold-bead front sights sometimes, but I keep coming back to black-on-black because of the sharper sight picture. I am seriously thinking of trying a Crimson Trace laser though, as an option for low light situations.
I like a bold colored or night sight (Green XS is perfect) up front and the least distracting rear sight possible - black black black works best for me though my current carry piece has a white outline.

You will like the Crimson Trace.
I've got 3 CT on a S&W J Frame, S&W Model 10 and Kimber Compact or Ultra.
I do a lot of walking around my place at night. I carry the J Frame in a pocket. With the CT the little gun owns the night.
The chances are if I ever had an intruder at night the shot would be 30 to 50 yards and with the laser the 38 is up to it.
I can actually make fairly easy shots with the laser at night that are hard shots with iron sights during the day.
A couple nights ago I shot a snake that I couldn't hardly see in the dark in the grass. In the summer my first round is shot. I just put the laser on what looked like it's center and the shot did the rest.
Close shots inside or outside are a quick red dot and a black hole.
There's a couple more CT lasers I'll get if CT ever makes them. Like for the Makarov.
I agree with everything you say, plus the fact that in some cases the "little red dot" is a deterrent to bad guys in itself. So I don't need to be sold on the considerable advantages in having a Crimson Trace equipped gun.
No, my problem is deciding which of several handguns I want to put it on.
Worse then a woman trying to pick out a pair of shoes.
