It appears to me that all silencers, or anything to mitigate shooting noise requires a threaded barrel. What about milsurps like the M1 or '03?

No one wants to thread (ruin) the end of a classic piece of history.

Why can't a sliencer be made with an attachment like the M1 flash hider, or the grenade launcher so the original firearm can be preserved?

Because concentricity and axial alignment. Suppressors are not flash hiders, much more at stake and much less margin for misalignment.

Your firing a bullet through something that cost a grand and took a year to get; do you really want to hang that invesment on the tolerances & quality control of century old guns made to specifications that never included mounting suppressors?

I have a spare barrel for my M1 carbine that I thought about having threaded and running a suppressor on it. But reports of people who did so are not favorable. Apparently it is super gassy and unpleasant.

That's what I had read about sticking a can on an AR15 that it would be gassy and unpleasant. But I would say it's far more pleasant to shoot my carbine with my "cheap" rebel alliance 3 chamber can on there. It makes it a little dirtier around the chamber area.

I know the Swedish Mausers came threaded from the factory, wonder how well they would line up? Plus no idea what thread they would use.

Suppressors are not illegal in Sweden, so if you get the thread major and minor size and pitch, you could just make or have made a connector to fit a Form I can. The 160 Cacarno bullet .267 can be loaded sub sonic, This I have done in my 6.5 Grendel to full function an AR. That 160 at just under 1100 FPS has quite a bit of penetration.

I was thinking about this just the other day, can you share the load data you used for subsonic 160's in your Grendel?

I would be careful about concentricity as others have said. Even say for a Swede Mauser that is threaded, it was threaded with the intent of a flash hider. A flash hider that extends 2” has a lot more tolerance in concentricity than a 6” or 8” suppressor.

In relation to a .308 bullet, what is the hole diameter thru which it must pass in a silencer?

Typically a .30 cal can will have a bore of .365"-.375". Unless it's meant for an AK; those often have a 9mm+ bore size, .420" or more to compensate for crap threads and wiggly barrels.

Generally speaking, you want about .050"-.060" diametral clearance in a suppressor. Even if perfectly concentric and axially aligned, apertures too close to bullet diameter will influence bullet flight.

I think you have two choices. The first would be to get a new barrel and thread that. The second would be to work up some sort of mount that fits to the muzzle and probably would attach to the bayonet lug. Thread that.
