Will be used on whitetail as Ohio has recently approved rifles with straight walled cartridge. Anybody have any experience with the H&R Handi-Rifle or CVA Scout in 44 mag? Any thoughts or opinions would be much appreciated.

Not in 44mag but I do have a handi in 300blk and I like it. I upgraded the stock on it to the survivor stock. It shoots good. 1" at 100yds. Very small, mine is 16" brl and 30" overall

I have a contender in 44 mag with 16" barrel. It has swatted a whitetail or two... pistol form I am pie plate accurate to 100 yards but the gun and round are capable of so very much more. That big ol bullet bucks wind extremely well and can push it's way through a bit of brush to find meat. If I were in your shoes with the knowledge I have now I would probably go with the scout but both are great guns for the money and will certainly do the trick.

By the way my barrel likes 200 gr jhp over a moderate load of 231, and the same bullet over a STOUT load of aa7

Yea, I'm leaning toward the Scout. Like the fluted ss barrel among other things. Also is a bit lighter which is a plus for my aged back.
