What makes the detachable about useless as a carry handle?

The gap for the handle is smaller, since it is sitting above where a standard A2 would start. I wear a size 13 wedding ring, I feel like detachable handles want to break my fingers every time I try to grab one.

And of course, if the handle works loose, dropping your rifle is a possibility.

All that said, only applies if you carry your rifle like a suitcase...

I carried an M16A1 enough in a previous life that most of my ARs today are flat tops.

Plus the detachables are about useless as a carry handle, pretty much just a really heavy rear sight assembly.

Come to think of it, I don’t think I have ever carried an AR by the carry handle.

Some of us old folks were taught to put the nose just above the charging handle and right on the back of the integral carry handle []

If your not overly concerned with cost just get on Gun Broker and find a Colt SP1. It’s as close as you’ll get, they are getting a little pricey though.

If you build your rifle like an A2, but with a flat top and detachable carry handle, that would ba a M16A3.
And if you carry a M16 by the carry handle, your doing it wrong.

When I was on Sand Hill, we had M16A4s, and my size 7 ring finger could not effectively carry the rifle by its detachable carry handle.
