So I have some LC brass I got from brass bombers years ago as well as some from police rangers. Today I am sizing a piece of LC 07 which I am pretty sure has 5-6 firings on it and I can see the ring around the case web. I set it aside and getting the picks out tomorrow to see if I can feel it starting to separate. Now, I find LC 15 and begin to size it and the press locks up. I am looking at the piece of brass and there appears to be a bulge in the middle. I push a little harder and the bulge and now a ring moves lower toward the rim. I push harder and eventually the bulge breaks free and it and the ring move about 1/8 the way up the case. The cases fall in and out of the Lyman case gauge just fine but I am not taking a chance on them. I had one last piece size just fine. Any idea what causes this?

Not enough lube on that one?
4 pieces did it and all same year. I never thought about the lube but that makes a lot of sense. I took the others and put in the Lyman case checker before sizing and it would catch 1/2-3/4 of the way in. I’ve had them catch before but not that high toward the mouth.

Machine gun fired?
It’s from a military supplier so that also makes sense due to the loose chambers. Never ran into it before so got curious. Thanks for the help. Toss or load? I have a feeling there will be more.

What makes you pretty sure it has multiple firings on it?

Most of the brass I got from Brass Bombers was truly "once fired" as evidenced by the crimp on the primer pocket. In the case of such brass, I just removed the primer crimp, resized it and put it into my reloading stream. I keep meticulous records, so once a case entered the reloading stream, I had a record of it "from 'cradle to grave'".

The LC 7 was all I used because I had the most of it. The rest I stashed away.

Okay guys got another one for ya.

I have never run into the case web issue and decided to take a paper clip and bend the tip and scrape the inside of the piece of brass with the ring. I can clearly feel the divot compared to other pieces. When I began checking other pieces that are 3-4 time fired I noticed very close to the bottom of the case it feels like sand paper. I mean maybe 30-50k from the bottom where the one that is separating is 1/4 way up the case. Both feel very different when scratching them with the paper clip, other cases are smooth as silk.

I've never loaded 5.56 LC brass, machinegunned or not......but I have loaded once fired.7.62 MG LC. Only with my Rock Chucker, not about to try that in my progressive. Hard enough in the single stage. I know it's once fired because I have to remove the primer crimps first. I learned that it can be sized easier by putting away the Imperial lube and using the ole RCBS lube and pad.....it became obvious to me that lubricity using that is better, because resizing is much easier....no more stuck or almost stuck brass.

-EDIT- Forgot to mention....the important parts.....die was RCBS small-base with an expander inside.....powdered mica was used there after less than stellar tries with the Imperial scraped off my finger tips....who would've known mica was slicker for that, I was surprised.

Small base was used because that old LC brass sprung back too much and wouldn't chamber in my Remington AR clone.

Before you throw away that brass try that.....

Head Separation is another thing......you could use a dremel tool to cut a suspect case in half length-wise for inspection.....then you'd know for sure.
