Sluging a barrel with what I have.

Hey fellas
I got this old mauser all peiced together and am pulling my hair out.
Thought it to be an 8mm round wont chamber and chambering a spent round compresses the neck big time. So it must be a 7 mm got some 7mm .284 bullets drop it in the barrel and falls right through. Shot out maybe but we have strong rifling. So i do lots of reloading and tryed several bullets down the throat .308 seems close .maybe a hair big and .284 way to small tryed 30/06 no go. So I need to slug I have 45 lead. wax what else can we use to gey a better idea of dia.
This was composed on my tiny lil phone with my big fat fingers. Sorry about the mispelled wards and so on.
Any help would be a big plus.

Find a smith that can do a chamber cast with Cerrosafe or buy 1/2# from Brownells and do it yourself. That is the only way to know for sure if the barrel is not marked. If you reload, you should have calipers and loading books with chamber dimension drawings, right?

Has the barrel been replaced? If not, post some pics of the receiver markings, and maybe someone can tell you what the caliber is or was. It could be 7.65x54.

What model is it? In 1905 the Germans changed the bore from 8.08 to 7.92

All good info i did slug the barrel .305 now we are getting places.
Markings on the rifel the lil german bird with a swastika letter and 4 or 5 digits mod.98 on the action 43 on top along with dou. It looks to have never had rear sights was fitted with a lymann peep also has scope mount drill and tapped holes no mount. the bolt is not matching the rifle.
This is a total project the price was right free i want to try my hand at bluing but dont want to to put the effort in to a wall hanger.
Now i tryed 30-06, 308, 8mm mauser, 7mm mauser I'm thinking 7.55 what do you think?

I think a Mauser certainly an original 8mm being rebarrelled 7.5 is unlikely.
But nothing i know of but an OLD 7.5 is a .305".

Were you able to get the bolt to close on the 8mm spent casing? You mentioned that it compressed the neck quite a bit. If you were able to close it on the 8mm without completely crushing the case, but it did push the shoulder back a little bit, I'd guess 7.65x53 Belgian/Argentine/Mauser/etc. Great round, although I'm still looking for the right one. If you couldn't close the bolt on it, I'd guess it's a 308 win.

You won't get anywhere near a bullet-drop-through-the-bore bore with it being shot out 7mm. My money is on a 308 or 7.65x53. Do you have any pics? I know you said that it was a pieced together gun, but being able to ID the receiver and any modifications done to it would be a good starting point.

I do not know, the 308-30/06 bullet will slide down the barrel of an 8mm Mauser, the 8mm Mauser small diameter of the barrel is said to be .311, the diameter of the 30/06 bullet is said to be .308” in diameter with the barrel having a small diameter of .300”. Then there is the B.M. with a bullet that is referred to as being the 7.65mm53 with a diameter of .311, that would be close to the 303 British bullet.

Back to my favorite forming die, the 308 W forming/trim die, my favorite, because??? it is short, then there is the 243 W forming die with the same case body/shoulder and smaller diameter neck, I can use the 308 W forming die to form 7.7 Japanese cases, 8mm57 cases, 7mm57 cases, 7.65mm53 cases also know as the Belgium Mauser and the Argentine Mauser, also used in Turkey. With one of the two short forming dies I can form 257 Roberts etc.. For everyone else there is cero-safe? I question the safe part.

When a 308 bullet is dropped down an 8mm barrel the bullet can be heard following the rifling.
