Slugs vs Chokes

I have a Stoger Uplander with a Improved Cyl and Modified removable chokes.
Being new at shooting slugs, is it advisable to shoot slugs (For H/D only) through the Mod choke?
The gun is a 20ga and finding Buckshot these days is a bear! I bought the slugs to give the little double some emergency teeth.
I have a couple boxes of #4 Phesant loads. would they be better through these 2 different chokes for shots not exceding 15 yars?

Slugs are fine through a mod choke. In most cases, I have found slugs to be more accurate in a MOD choke rather an IC choke

I'd use the ImpCyl for slugs myself... but it shouldn't hurt the MOD tube either. Make sure the choke tubes are properly tightened down no matter what you shoot through them. I always use choke tube lube on the threads myself, and recommend it.

I'm not a fan of birdshot (of any size) for HD, but if it's all you can find then your choices are limited. Keep looking for buckshot but use the biggest pellets you can find till some turns up... or just use slugs, if overpenetration will not be an issue.

ETA - just checked my usual sources for bulk orders of shotgun shells - nothing but OUT OF STOCK on 20 ga. buckshot did I see.

GENERALLY SPEAKING*** here, modified is about as tight as you want to go for shooting slugs, Improved Cylinder or cylinder (no choke) is slightly more accurate.

*** I say generally speaking, because every shotgun barrel/choke/ammo combination is a law unto itself. only way to KNOW is to shoot ammo of your choice.

I went though all the "Usual Suspects" of slugs looking for the best in MY Maverick 88, untill I stumbled upon one particular lot of PMC brand slugs. Went back and bought all of that lot on the shelf....250 of them.

Most of the time a improved cylinder/cylinder choke will be the most accurate. Tighter chokes deform the slug. It can be very difficult to shoot slugs from a double barrel. I would try both barrels to see if one is more accurate than the other.

For H/R where the action could be up close and personal....... I/c. will do nicely. In a room ,down the hall, etc. No problem.

I'd keep one barrel stoked with the #4's and one with the Slug that way you have the far and near bases covered. A load of #4's is going to ruin anyones parade if they get hit with them within HD ranges. The slug can reach out and touch them a little further away.
