Where the Red Fern grows..
I am hunting tomorrow morning.
I have not decided what bullet to use..
the Hornady 168 grain A-max match ballistic tip
the Hornady 165 grain BTSP interlock softpoint.
the Hornady 178 grain Match hollowpoint
the federal powershock 150 grain softpoint.
the first two are bullseye on at 100 yards.
all others are within 2" of bullseye. and I shot all. and are in the center rings of bullseye.
so considering all will hit, what is the best?

The Interlock or the Powershock. Whichever gives you the best out of your rifle. Both will perform well at dispatching a white tail. As HOO said, match grade bullets are not designed for penetration but for flight. All about balance with them. They tend to "blow up" when they contact bone. If you hit in the lung area you would probably get good results from one, but if you hit dead center shoulder you would more than likely not experience good results. Good luck tomorrow JD.

One of these two.

Oh and post pics, I think we all like to see the smile on your face when you bag your first deer. Good luck man, and squeeeeze that trigger, just like from the bench.

A smidgin less recoil with the 150s.

Art,

You seemed to handle them 400 Gr pills @ 2400 FPS just fine this fall. You ain't gettin an acute case of the girly man are you?:D

JD,
Of the choices you've mentioned for deer I'd go with the 150 gr FPS or the 165 gr IL's there isn't a bit of difference between the two as far as performance on deer sized critters. I'd go with the most accurate and the one you are dead on with.

H&H, I got the Nitro in the other day and after shooting it at the range yesterday, I may have to go get me a training bra myself :(

Aw, the weight of that .404 made it seem pretty much like an '06. Probably be adequate for Bambi. :D

As far as 30-caliber bullets, some eighty years of Eatman family experience is that most any 150-grain soft-point will ruin Bambi's day, demonstrably out to 500 yards. (Okay, that's my father's doing. I've never gotten past 450.)

Tight groups are nice, but the most important thing for a hunter is that the first shot from a cold barrel always goes to the same place as it did yesterday, last week or last month.
