I understand and hear you. Just offering another thought. Of the above querried about by the OP, the 9mm is about mid-pack and more accurate that a shotgun.Sure, if you can HIT it. Squirrel's a tough target. My Ruger Mk2 is 1" at 50 yards accurate with its 2X optic. I prefer accuracy to power. A head shot on a 25 lb pig is all it takes for the rimfire. I've killed 200 lb pigs in the trap with a NAA 1 5/8" barrel mini revolver in .22LR...head shot.
I've shot heaps of game with a target sighted Belgian Hi-Power and it is generally found on my hip/person anyway.. kinda a win-win and or the chicken or egg type thing perhaps. It'll get a lot of stuff done but yea, you gotta be able to hit with it.
