I was just doing some research on Smartcarry and saw a link to THR by a guy named loneviking. I know he was not using SC but it got me thinking, how difficult would it be to insert kydex between the layers of denim? Would that make it more difficult for AD's like this to happen?

Just out of curiosity, is loneviking still around? I must say it made me cringe just thinking about it.

i never heard of smartcarry but by the looks if it its not too smart. Looks like a good way to have your pistol fall outta the "holster".

ahh... just found the thread you were talking about... AD from a cheap nylon knock off into the manhood! OUCHERS! Time for a real holster and a revolver.

Well, I see I'm still being talked about!

No, Smartcarry isn't designed to have a holster inserted into it. I finally found one at a gun show to examine and except for the cotton padding (or whatever material they use) it isn't really different from what I had. The cotton padding isn't thick enough to prevent an AD with some weapons. As for putting Kydex in it? I doubt it as it would be pretty tough to sit down seeing as Kydex doesn't bend.

If you need to carry well concealed there are better options. The Kangaroo holster, or the Deep Conceal holsters are worn under the shirt, they are comfortable and a whole lot safer. If you are going to carry deeply concealed you need to match the gun to the holster. Find a gun that's double action only with a very tough trigger pull, or with a slide (and not a frame) mounted safety. An example would be the S&W Bodyguard .380 and NOT something like the Sig P238.

And Salmoneye, I'd say you're making a good choice in having nothing to do with it. Remember folks, neither holsters nor guns come with an Underwriters Laboratory testing seal. There's a number of unsafe holsters out there that are being sold on hype, so buyer beware.

If I might add. I returned my SmartCarry. It prints just like if you put the gun in your pocket. IF you get caught up in the product being great you forget the gun really can't hide anywhere down there.

Also, despite what most say, no one is going to assume your gun is flattering bulge in your pants. The grip prints just like the slide. I haven't heard of any man with an L shaped dingy...

Cliff: my P3A printed with a smart carry.

I have seen the deep conceal but was unsure how easy it would be to access the gun.

Your event is exactly what scares me most about SC.

Glad to know you are still kicking around.

I have seen the deep conceal but was unsure how easy it would be to access the gun.

Pretty much why I don't carry with mine anymore. Seated, it's impossible, standing it's just SSSLLLLOOOOWWWWW and kinda obvious if you go for your gun.

I can see where it'd be dangerous with a Glock trigger, but I like LONG DA/DAO triggers for pocket carry and would prefer this for "smart carry" as they are much safer systems. Actually, I carried a revolver in mine. You're not going to get an AD in a soft pocket holster when your trigger is a LONG 10 ounces (Kel Tec P11) and I'm very accurate and fast with a DAO gun. I don't need a 4 lb short through trigger to hit with.

BUT, I carry that P11 in a soft POCKET holster, much easier to get at, faster, and I can walk along with my hand on my gun if I feel threatened which greatly increases presentation speed. The SC is in a box somewhere, makes a good hidden wallet belly band on vacations. I don't carry a gun in it.

The deep conceal and/or the kangaroo holsters are not fast to access. The vids look fast but they are pulling from a holster without the retaining strap being over the gun. The straps attach with velcro which also gives you away when you pull the strap off. Still, if you absolutely have to have a gun and keep it well concealed then it could be a good choice.

Accessorize. There is no one holster for all situations.

Smartcarry works if you are using an outside the pants shirt.

Kangaroo has to be a baggy shirt, and thick, so the velcro adjustable straps don't show.

Pocket carry? Have to be the right size pockets otherwise the grip can show.

You need to match the carry gun and it's safety system to the holster.

My new addition is from Pistol wear:

I guess my Smart Carry is defective. I have used it for years and I have never shot myself. I always carried about 11 o clock on the outside of my shirt just below the waistline. I could just slide my hand under my belt and the gun was in my hand. This has allowed me to carry a larger gun while being able to tuck my shirt. Recently I have begun to carry in the 1 o clock appendix position which is my preference with an untucked t shirt. Today I am at work wearing a t shirt tucked and blue jeans and comfortably carrying a Glock 26. I have the SC on around the rim of my boxers and my shirt tucked over it. The gun rides in the same position it would in any other holster I just dont have visible clips. I have wilderness belt over it and wala. While its not the fastest its also not my first line of defense. Its also a lot quicker than any other firearm that I have left at home. I have heard of folks inserting a piece of milk carton on both sides of the firearm. I have inserted unloaded gun and tried to cause the trigger to pull and its nearly impossible. I am a quite active guy and its not gonna be an accident.

I've got a crate full of unused holsters ranging from 30 bucks to 140 (a Rosen Workman tuckable) and a few I made myself. My one that GETS used 99 percent of the time is an 8 dollar Blackhawk number 4 pocket holster. I carry occasionally a bigger gun in a Bulldog fanny pack holster.

Camsdaddy...comments pretty much like yours convinced me that my worries about the Smartcarry design were unfounded. In fact, I carried that little CZ unloaded for a couple of weeks to see if the safety would come off and it didn't........until I changed the position of the gun a bit. I wouldn't say that yours is defective, I would say that you've been lucky and especially so carrying a Glock.

The fact is that there is no way of knowing how many AD/nd's there are from any holster. There's no data base where these get put in. There's no automatic reporting system nationwide. Many don't even make the paper. That's why a bit of common sense and a lot of healthy skepticism over both holster and gun claims can go a long way toward keeping gun carriers safe.

Ive used a Smart Carry daily for about 6 years now. Never had any issues with any of the guns I used in them (P230, P239, Seecamp).

I use mine in an atmosphere of "no carry", and hiding it has never been an issue. As far as the "bulge", I wear Carhart type carpenter jeans, which are basically flat and fitted in the front, and a gun like my Seecamp is a lot more noticeable in my pocket than it is in the SC.

Speed and ease of access isnt bad really. I can get to it a lot quicker one handed than a gun in my pocket, and can do it sitting down, something thats almost impossible with pocket carry. I suppose this may depend on how your built (Im not overweight), but even then, pocket carry is just as big a problem.

Safety wise, I wouldnt have a problem using one of my Glocks, assuming I was wearing the right pants to conceal it. The material is thick enough to make tripping the trigger a non issue. Even with no holster at all, the Glocks trigger is a non issue. Ive been carrying a second unloaded Glock just stuffed in my waistband pretty much every minute Ive been home for about a couple of years now as a test, and even with overly rough handling, even picking it up by the trigger, its never dropped unless I did so intentionally.

I think a lot of the concerns and complaints about the SC are made by people who havent used one and dont understand them. Those who have them and know them, know what they are and how well they work, when used and worn properly. I find mine are one of the most versatile holsters Ive ever used, and I wont be without one.

I'm too squeamish to try appendix carry, personally, but if you're looking to go this route, look at the fusionpac. It's essentially a smartcarry with a kydex holster attached.

I've used my Smartcarry for several years, and not one unpleasant incident. I carried my P-11 in it with the grip extension at the 12:30 position. I recently put the original mag floor plate back in the mag, and you can't tell I am carrying. I have never had an issue with the gun coming out or even shifting in the Smartcarry, unless I was taking it out on purpose. I haven't seen the video in question, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was some sort of negligence involved.

Like any blanket statement, "Smartcarry is unsafe", there may a grain of truth, but usually it's overblown and inaccurate. I will continue to carry sight unseen with my Smartcarry. :neener:

Ruger LC9, SR9c or SR40c. These have high quality to price ratio.
