I just purchased a Smith 617. It is the 6 shot version with a 6 inch barrel. Do you like yours? What brand of ammo do you recommend?

Congrats! I was eyeing a target 617 10-shot last year. Would still love to get one if the prices came down even just a little bit.
As for 22 ammo, I like the Federal Classsics in the blue/gray box. Clean, reliable & accurate in all my 22's; revo, pistol & 10/22. Honestly tho, you'll probably have to go through a few diff't makes to find the stuff your 617 likes best.
Enjoy!

I have a 6" 617 with the 10 shot stainless cylinder. When I first got it I clamped it in my Ransom Rest and tried out a bunch of different ammo I had on hand. Most shot OK but I got the best results from CCI Green Tag, no big surprise. I then tried some of the Aguila .22 Standard velocity I had for my 1st gen Colt Woodsman and it just completly blew away the Green Tag.

As with most .22's you have to try out different ammo to see what your particular ammo yours likes the best.

My (pre-agreement) 8.375" model 617 ten-shooter prefers CCI Green Tag and Standard Velocity. It's a pretty good plinker; unfortunately, it's a bit muzzle-heavy for what's left of my wrist. Stocks by Herrett's. Bead blasting and hammer and trigger jewelling by Magnaport.

The S&W 617 has to be the ultimate DA .22LR revolver. I've NEVER met or heard of a dissatisfied owner of one of these - regardless of what brand of ammo they were using.

Well, I can tell you what it DOESN'T like, which is Remington Thunderbolt. Won't even seat 'em easily in the chamber. BTW, mine has the best practical accuracy of any repeating handgun I've ever had. A few others might shoot tighter groups off the sandbags, but nothing is as easy to hit plinking targets with. Empty 12g shotshells, 10-15 yds, double action, nooooo problem. And, as anyone who knows will tell ya, I'm not that good a shot.

Mine is just like yours but has a weaver 1.5-4x pistol scope. It likes all ccis. My favorite is the mini-mag hp but it did very well with the first batch of Velocitors that came out. Shoots stingers pretty well too.

I LOVE my 4" S&W 617 10-shot. It has to be about the most fun gun I own. As far as ammo goes, I haven't really sat down to scientifically find the "best" brand. I just enjoy the heck out of plinking with the little beauty. One of these trips to the range I'll have to get serious about accuracy and finding the best ammo.
DAL

P.S. If I ever get lucky enough to hit the lottery, I'll buy the exact same model, but with a
6" barrel.

Sold my Taurus 94 last week (good riddance!) and I am in the market for a 617. Do they all have target triggers and hammers and adj. sights. After the horrible trigger on the Taurus I am looking for something smooth, what is the chance the 617 will come with smooth, sweet trigger and how much does S&W charge for an action job.

In terms of accuracy would I be better off with an older k22?

Your thoughts are appreciated.

In my opinion, the model 617 isn't as good a revolver as the K-22. That saidâ„¢, it's hard to find a K-22 in really good condition at anything like a reasonable price. My model 617 is an excellent plinker, not a match pistol.
