I just picked up a very clean semi auto S&W model 1000 shotgun. After taking it apart and looking at it, I don't think it was fired the 100 times the owner said. It has hardly any wear whatsoever and the stock is immaculate, the barrel has no discoloring and such from heat. The action isn't loose and is still very smooth.

I don't know the model off hand (I forgot since I just got it) but the barrel has that vented rib alont the entire length and there is no removeable choke. Just a solid barrel and the stamping on the side says FULL. I bought this with the intention of skeet shooting and I know that a FULL choke is not the most ideal choice.

so, my question is how hard would it be to take the gun to a gunsmith and have him cut, bore, machine or whatever it is that needs to be done to be able to adjust chokes. For the time being I will use my Remington 870 pump action but I'm admittedly not good enough to shoot both birds. It's one or the other.

I will get more info on this gun when I get home. But I bought it because the price was right. And the fact that there wasn't a single scratch on it. It's beautiful. I do know that it was made by Howa, for Smith & Wesson and that S&W didn't play much in the shotgun world but the reviews I have seen had nothing but good to say about this shotgun.

Thanks for the info. Any idea where I can just find a barrel that has it done already?

It's already skeet season and I don't want to be out of a gun for 2 weeks. That one site charges $250 just for the already machined barrel, but to have the work done is $125 on your existing barrel.

Thanks again,
Ralph

Well, you should have thought of that before buying the wrong shotgun after Skeet season started.

Send it to Carlson's and take your lumps until you get it back.

Doubtful it will take nearly two weeks.
2 1/2 months before Kansas hunting season opens up.

They get busy and backed up in the fall hunting season, not in the 110 degree middle of summer here.

The S&W 1000 is my wife's favorite shotgun, peroid. I love it too, as it is the smoothest and sweetest shooting shotgun we have ever used. It took me 20 years to find one for her, as they were only made for about 5 years origionally. Google the gun and study the gas system and action. It is different form other autoloaders. There is a recoil bushing bumper that is usually missing that can be made successfully from leather.

Great shotgun!

Gee, thanks. I didn't buy the wrong one. I knew it had a full choke. I called them and he said it would take two weeks from the minute I sent it in to the minute I got it back.

I bought the gun because it's semi auto and I couldn't find a good used semi auto around in my price range. Just getting into the sport and didn't really want to drop a grand on a gun. Carlson's is an option but there has to be someone in Colorado that does this. I will use my pump action with the skeet choke until I get it done.

I ended up just buying a new skeet barrel for it. Gun works amazing now. after finally getting all of the little bugs worked out.

I was not impressed with my dealings with the seller of the barrel though. His price was $245 and I paid him, not soon after (hours) I found another guy selling the same barrel for $50 bucks less and he wouldn't meet his price. That seemed odd. He did take my FULL barrel in as a trade and gave me a $100 for that. Turned around and put the FULL barrel for sale at $245. I found him rude and short.

The Barrel Exchange had the same barrel for $195 and he offered to pay me $100 for my trade. Both dealers barrels were rated at 100%.

I might be wrong here but I think that the first dealer is a crook. I won't ever call him again. If I was him I would have met the competition's price. I will deal with the Barrel Exchange from now on.

That other guy can have a romantic relationship with the South end of a Northbound donkey.

Call Mike Orlen in MA - he charges about 35 for the threading, plus chokes with about a 3-4mday turnaround - he comes highly recommended from the folks at Shotgun World.com

I send all barrel work to Steve Rose at Rose Action Sports. His web site is www.roseactionsports.com and his prices and turn around time is the best in the business and so is his work. He can thread your barrel for which ever chokes you want to use. I send him four barrels at a time and have always got them back in less then two weeks from the time I shipped them.
