Smith & Wesson 659 questions

Hey guys I have a couple of questions that I would appreciate some help with.

How easy is it to remove the pin where the hammer pivots? Also, on my 659, on the right side of the frame, the hammer pin has a lever or hand that comes down and secures the end of the sear pin. That lever doesn't seem to show up on all 659s from what I can tell.

Does that mean that I would have to push out this pin and lever from the left side of the frame? That's what makes sense to me. Would a nail punch be an appropiate tool for driving the pins out?

Also, how do you remove the safety assembly? Mine has ambidextrious levers.

Hello again guys.

I was able to take the gun to a smith who took it appart for me, and I was able to repolish the flat surfaces, to remove major scratches. I also got some hogue cocobolo grips on it, which show up very red in the picture but are not really like that.

I have two more questions if anyone would like to help:

1) I feel a little grinding when pulling the trigger in SA, and I know it's the magazine safety. I believe it is the drawbar rubbing against the magazine. I have tried feeling the drawbar with my finger and can't feel any major burrs, neither in the magazine. I was also warned against polishing internal parts. Is this grinding feel common in old S&W autos with mag safeties?

2) The safety lever screw keeps getting loose. What do you recommend to make it stick? I would not like the solution to be permanent.

We tried Locktite (didn't work). Finally we just stocked replacement levers and screws. The only soloution is to replace it with a 5906 type lever.

We carried (AND SOME STILL DO) 659'S since our changeover in 84. They were always reliable and never failed us. Many were taken from service only due to the weight and smaller lighter S&W 3rd. Gen coming online.

There are very few gunsmiths who were good with the 2nd. Gen firearms. I would not suggest trying it yourself as that can only result in problems that could cost. In the past S&W would fix anything but in today's economic climate that is no longer the case unless it can be proved that you are the original owner.

I still have mine. I can't bring myself to sell it. Not that they bring that much anyway.

I have a 659 and love it. I must have gotten lucky with the trigger, or someone before I owned it had it tweaked. My gunsmith, who has extensive experience with Smiths, tweaked a trigger on my 669 and it feels very similar, smooth with a light crisp break, surprisingly good.

The gun is on the thick side, and heavy, but I don't carry mine so it isn't much of an issue. It's a keeper.

I actually have a nostalgic tie to the 659. My first bb gun as a child was a daisy 693. As you can see here:

the daisy 693 was made to look like a 659. I was wanting to expand to a 9mm for fun, plinking and "stay at home", so I went with the 659. It feels very solid, absorbs lots of recoil, no failures yet, and it looks great.

I may have someone take a look at the trigger in the future, but I'd think it'd be best not the spend that $ right now.

Magazine rattle

Hey guys I have another question for you. Is it normal or ok that the magazine rattles slightly when inside the pistol?

It's not the pistol or magazine by itself, but when the mag's inserted, there is a small amount of play from side to side, less than 1mm I would say.

I hadn't noticed because I mostly handle the pistol with the mag out or with hearing protection when I'm at the range.

------------------ Never mind, it IS the magazine. Whe the mag is loaded the (carrier?) rattles, but not when it's empty.

I would say that a small amount of side to side play is normal, and it probably varies between guns. I just checked a S&W 457, 669, CS9, and a SIG 2340 that were handy and all had some play, less than 1mm. There is a very slight rattle sound, but nothing that I would call a rattle that you would hear unless you are very deliberately moving the mag. I seem to recall with other guns this can be more obvious. If you put a round (or preferably a snap cap) in the mag you might find the "rattle" to be less.

But yeah, it will be there to varying degrees from gun to gun and is normal, at least as I can recall.

Thanks, and I did check again and found the rattle comes from the magazine follower, which only rattles when the mag has some cartridges inside. The empy mag doesn't rattle at all (I assume it's because the follower is resting on the top of the mag). When empty, there is no rattle from the mag or from the mag in the pistol.
