I have a 66 with the V-notch rear sight which I despise (meaning the sight). I'd like to replace it with a square notch blade (or sight assembly). My question is what dimension is being referred to when the sight is listed as 0.146 on the sight linked below? Is that the width of the aperture, the height, both, or something else?

Thanks.

I can't answer your questions on dimensions but I have a 66-2 that has a Millet Target Sight on it and I love it. Easy to see and fast to acquire. I don't know if this Millet sight is still available or not. I notice that the sight from Midway you have linked is "Out of stock, backorder OK"

It's the height of the blade, which you would also call the width of the blade if you thought of it as a rectangle with width and length. Wind the blade all the way in one direction and measure. What is the barrel length of your Model 66? I'll go to the S&W sight chart and tell you which height it should be.

When shooting 125 gr factory magnums in an old model 19, the rear sight was way high in its adjustment, as in dangerously close to coming off the elevation screw threads. That, and differing barrel lengths and calibers is why theres different height rear sight blades. A V notch doesn't sound factory, were they ever offered by Smith? Is your rear sight a replacement, such as either just the blade, or the entire sight body, or was it a modified factory rear blade?

If the rest of the rear sight is factory, you should only need these parts, in the correct height of course.

Interested in Stus results with the sight height info.

Well I just looked it up. S&W made it simple this time. Model 66 with 2.5, 4 and 6 inch barrel calls for a .146. Exceptions are Model 66-4 with a 3" barrel may have either the .146 or a .160 And that is the sum total of the S&W blade kit chart.

Measurement is the thickness of the blade, nothing to do with the aperture. Easiest way was to take a photo. Here is a .106 and a .164 blade and how to measure. I think this will explain it.
