Smooth bore accuracy

we have always tried to use the smoothest balls and tightest patches to get that last little bit of accuracy out of our smooth bores. but stop and think. look at a golf ball. you think they put those dimples on there for looks? sooooo, i took two old horseshoe rasp and roughed up a few .60 balls. really look like crap when i was finished. but here,s the best part. loaded them bare, no patch. after two or three rounds, the barrel fouled up a little and the thing started shooting better than it ever had. the recoil felt like i had one of those loads you had to hammer down the barrel. figure as the fouling built up it was having the same effect as a patch and the rough surface from the rasp(like a round ball with a bunch of tiny teeth) was acting as a bore brush and cleaning enough to let the ball seat easy. have not used a patch in two years and my biggest giggle is beating rifles at our fall shoot. you do get that carbon ring just above the powder charge after a while, but i can get 20 rounds on targets or steel before it needs to be knocked out. give this a try and freak you buddies out when your loading like crazy and getting 3 good shoots a minute. works great in my old north west trade gun. give it a try.
patches? we don,t use no stinking patches.

you,ve seen those old roundballs dug up at old fort sites with teeth marks, we were always told about people putting bullets in their mouth to bite down on while having something painful done(amputation, surgery, and the like) maybe they were just doing the same thing by roughing up their ammo. wasn,t there, just seems like it,s right.
