I got into a disucssion witha friend about snake shot. Well, normally for snake I'd use a 12 ga shotgun or a .22 with snake shot. I was wondering if it would be possible to load a black powder pistol with shot to work as a crude anti snake weapon. The reason I'm asking is it is allot easier to carry a pistol than a big shotgun.

Works fine...I jused use a flet wad on top of the powder, shot, and either a second felt wad or home-punched card wad. Works best with less powder (usually about 15-20gr.) and more shot.

But there isn't a good way to get those wads to hold up to the recoil from previous rounds, so it's usually only used in one chamber.

With wads

I'm going to experiment this weekend. If I were to use a thick layer of grease infront of the felt do you think that would hold it from comming loose when I fired.

You will probably kill the snake by suffocation when the grease hits it's face!
I stopped using grease after the first time I went to the range, it is SO MESSY!

Snake-Shot

The packaging for Ox-Yoke wonder wads have the instructions for using shot in a revolver. I scanned the card to a pdf, I can email it to you if you'd like. The only problem is the range ... you're looking at a MAXIMUM of 15 feet. naturally, you'll have to experiment with charges, shot size, and patterning.

Powder, card wad, shot, round ball.

Short range, not a lot of power. A ring of shot with a
hole in the middle.
Can be loaded with more then one chamber.
Good for snakes.

I live in S.Texas I guarantee you if you came across some of the
rattlesnakes we have here. You would be running for a shotgun maybe two.

Shotgun

I definitely agree about the shotgun. If I found a poisonous snake in the back yard I would use the 12 ga. I do a lot of hiking, fishing, boating, horseback riding. It's not always practical to carry a 28 inch barrel gun. I'd like to use the .44 because it is my favorite gun.
