So I shot a .44 magnum for the first time yesterday...

Aye, that's the bestie, took me on a pretty good ride. I said I'll try not to do it again, but if ya twist me arm, I'll give it a tickling again.

Dad, dear old dad always wanted me to try his 300 gr compressed, rebated hornady xtp load developed for hus Super Blackhawk Hunter model in my Vaquero.

No thanks, a Winchester white box 240gr sp is PLENTY of recoil for me thanks very much.

Truth be known I mostly shoot 'cowboy' or mid range 1000fps stuff out of the Ruger and only practice with the hot stuff around deer/elk season.

I had the "compensating" argument with a colleague while working as a surveyor in a remote area. I told my partner that if we should ever be charged by an angry bear or moose, you show him what you have and I'll shoot him with this (S&W 629). At least he'll die laughing.

The recoil you feel in your hand or on your shoulder is a good indication of the momentum felt by the target, you don't get one without the other.

Big Bore

Marshall, I have a 454 and a 480 the 454 has a bit more recoil than the 480, both of mine are Ragin Bull with ported barrels and good Houge grips and i use a Uncle Mikes shooting glove when i shoot the hand cannons, i also have a S&W 500 mag you really need a glove with that one. but i love to see the impact when i shoot bowling pins, the 500 will go in one side and out the other.

Cav Soldier................................ALLONS

Hey, it depends on the handgun.

My second handgun was a 7 1/2" Super Blackhawk, like Glock19Fan described. I was so unimpressed by the recoil, I went out and bought a .454 Casull. The long barrel, the weight of the gun make the round a pussycat to shoot. Want even softer recoil? Shoot a 9 1/2" Super Redhawk in .44 Magnum. Feels like a .38 special.

My 4" 629 kicks a bit with full-power loads, but I think a .357 snubbie kicks harder.

Where people get into recoil trouble is when they try to shoot real rounds out of super lightweight revolvers. Yeah, a 19 ounce .44 magnum is going to hurt, one should have known that before one bought it, no whining

Glock19Fan: good show, glad you enjoyed it, they're nothing to be afraid of.
