SOG knives seem to get widely mixed reviews, but I do really like the look of some of their models. Any first hand experience? I'm particularly looking at the Flash, Flash 2, and the Trident.

Thanks

Sog is an excellent knife manufacturer IMO. Years ago, my first "everyday knife" was the old Sog MagnaDot. Nothing fancy, a simple lockback with a 440(A?) blade and Zytel handle. However, the fit and finish was superb. It held up well to the years of abuse I put it through when in my late teens (I worked in construction while in school).

I later purchased the Sog Seal 2000 to go in my Go-Bag and found it, too, is of apparent high quality.

Currently, my blade loyalties essentially lean towards Benchmade and, to a lesser degree, Kershaw. After 7 years of daily IWB carry of Benchmade Strykers and I couldn't possibly be happier.

Again, Sog is a fine brand in my opinion. The only place I think you might go wrong is on the price. Simply shop around. Good luck and enjoy!

I don't know why they'd get mixed reviews. They're one of the best knife companies out there with excellent quality and good designs.

I have had a hard time taking them seriously ever since they started carving out their initials in the blades.

I'm no knife expert, but I've owned three SOGs and all three of them have impressed me as quality blades. They hold an edge well, sharpen easily with my little Lansky kit, and they hold up to lots of abuse. That's about all I need from a knife.

In fact, my SOG Hunter Revolver gets carried more than any other blade I own right now. Other than my Leatherman, of course.

I suspect reviews on most SOGs that border on negative are the result of elitist views on knives. No one ever said they are custom knives.

I have a number..... forget how many.... lets see, tigershark (2), SOG Tech I, NW Hunter, Hunter Revolver, Field Pup (2), Seal Pup Elite, Air SOG serrated, Blink, ... probably leaving out a couple..... I like 'em. Have been very pleased with them and they are a good value for the price. Most complain about the kydex sheaths.

I carry the Seal Pup Elite a good bit in the woods. The Hunter Revolver is new and it will be carried later on this year deer hunting. I recommend them quite a bit for a moderate priced knife to use.

I have a Flash II

with plastic handle. I like it for its strong lock and button-operated closing. The blade is a little thick for opening letters, but I guess that's what makes it stand up to abuses better.

BTW: it's made of a decent stainless steel. Mine only recently starting to have rust spotts. My bad. poor cleaning after cutting fruit. but considering how much fruit, steak, chicken, envelops, and boxes I put it through, it stood up against rust pretty well. I also happen to carry my Flash II inside my belt between my pants and shirt. so it stood up to years of sweat without rust until now.

Um, hso, do you know if I could just polish off those rust spots of my stainless steel blade? My fingernails aren't doing the trick so the spots aren't superficial.

I have a Seal Pup and I love it. Perfect size blade, high quality nippon steel not china.

Only thing I would change is the handle shape and the sheath. I think the handle was updated for the Seal Pup Elite so it's probablly good to go. :)

In addition to my other SOGs, my next one will likely be a Twitch II. It is sort of a larger version of the Blink. Really fast knives if you like the assisted open technology; works really well. You won't go wrong buying a SOG knife. If you have problems, just send it back and they will fix it.

I own a Trident and love it. SOG has to be one of the nest knives for the price.

Have a tanto-point X-ray Vision. Although the blade steel is quite nice, I find myself not carrying it because the pocket clip is too tight and has sharp edges, and the blade wiggles side-to-side a bit. My Benchmade Griptilian feels much sturdier (no wiggle) and hand-friendly.

I have owned a few SOG knives and liked them all. My most recent purchase is the SOG Trident. Great knife, weighs very little but it is large. Definitely not a knife you want use at the office to open mail. All of my SOG knives have come razor sharp. Their customer services also has a very good reputation.

After getting fed up with my Gerbers and Kershaws breaking, I bought a SOG Flash II, which held up very well, until I lost it. Replaced it with a Seal Pup, which has also been an excellent knife.

SOG A SOMETIMES CHALLENGING CLOSER

I carry a little SOG Flash 1 in my pocket and the larger Flash 11 in a backpack (obviously not for instant, "tactical" use!). The Flash 1 is a convenient, easy to use knife and opens easily, but my one problem is that closing it can at times be frustrating, since you have to raise your thumb UP (not down, to depress the liner lock) and you have to pull back the small lever ALL THE WAY for the blade to unlock before you can flip it back into the knife. This closing technique is kind of "counter-intuitive" since with most knives you don't raise your thumb up.

I have a few SOGs and feel that for a mainstream mass producer, they are well above average in quality. I don't have the Trident but do have the SF version. Very well built knife. Pretty heavy for its size, heavier than even my Randall No. 1 with a ~1¼" longer blade. I have not doubt the Trident will work against any normal heavy duty knife task you put it up against.

I own the field pup and the seal pup elite I use the seal pup regulary for every day chores as cutting string, rope, rubber tubing and anything else that just needs to be cut. At the camp site with my son (boyscout) it has served as a camp chore knife as well as food prep like slicing tomatoes cutting potatoes cutting up meat. I have not actually used the seal pup elite yet the field pup is just so good I have not had the desire to switch over yet. I bought the seal pup elite because I just liked the way it looked. I am sure though once it gets used I wont want to put it down either.

Seal Pup Elite is a great knife. I have been carrying my VIC Soldier and a SOG Twitch II lately. I really like the Twitch II; just a fun little knife that does not show in your pocket. I use a Flash II for work stuff. It gets abused. Blade is already chiped from in advertently trying to cut metal. :)

I have a SOG Bowie, and love it. Had it about 12 years. I have wanted a Trident but have yet to buy one. I think they are probably the most underrated knife out there for the money.

i have a SOG trident, havent had it very long so i havent got to abuse it too much yet. so far great knife though.
