Well I've just finished our departments rifle qualification school, passed qualification, and was issued a duty rifle. One of the things I learned in all of this is that I'm very bad at position shooting, and that I really need to work on my distance stuff with irons. All my rifle experience comes from the much closer CQB style of shooting (7yds to maybe 15yds), which I shoot well. Prone at 100yds though was not anything to be proud of.

I've decided that I'm going to start shooting High Power with my issue rifle (Colt 6920, 16" AR w/ detachable carrying handle). From some of the research it appears as though flat tops w/ carrying handles mounted are legal in SR now? From what I gather though I'd still need a 20" barrel and a fixed stock to compete in SR correct?

I'm not overly concerned about being in SR or MR, as I'm not going to be shooting near the top of either class for a while. However is an adjustable stock and flat top a problem in MR?

Finally where exactly can I find a high power match or two in the central Texas Area?

Thanks,

-Jenrick

Thanks for the response. I know I won't be competative with a 16" and stock sights, but I wouldn't be with a tube gun either :)

Texas highpower

I would check the Texas State Rifle Association site under "events." I'd also look at the Panola County Gun Club website: www.PCGC.com. I would specifically contact Rick Crawford, the Panola match director under his contact button. He's the Texas Highpower Rifle Director.

In your area Paul Laberge at the Temple Gun Club and Ken Gaby, another TSRA highpower rifle director would be helpful.

I'd also look over events at the Terrell Rifle and Pistol Club. www.tr-pc.com.

For a textbook I would order the Service Rifle guide from the CMP for about 12:00.

You are welcome to contact me in private messages. I'm on the Texas National Match Team and shoot a lot of Service rifle.

Additional info

Don't worry about buying equipment or having a rifle or ammo. If you ask we have plenty of loaners for new folks. Be glad to have you along.

There are several big events going on this spring at Camp Swift- the Texas MidRange Championship in April and the Highpower Championship in May. Both of those are multi day events. Temple shoots every Sunday and Austin rifle club shoot near Manor once a month.

Youtube Highpower

A little Highpower Rifle on Youtube if you do a search. Just put up a new video on how to put on a USGI web sling. Do a search for Blackfork6 and you ought to be able to watch the most highpower match videos.
