Study: No Link Between Concealed-Carry Laws, Reduced Crime

A study on concealed-handgun laws finds that violent crime is not reduced
in states that allow citizens to carry concealed weapons, UPI reported
Aug. 15.

Thomas Kovandzic of the University of Alabama and Thomas Marvel of JUSTEC
Research examined Florida's right-to-carry law, which has been in
existence for 12 years.

The researchers found that only 2.1 percent of Floridians took advantage
of the law and obtained a license to carry a concealed handgun.

Crime reduction has been the basis of arguments by proponents of
concealed-handgun laws. They argue that the concealed-carry laws
discourage criminals because they fear potential victims might be armed.

But the researchers concluded that concealed-carry laws also allow a
larger number of potential criminals to obtain permits, as well.

"There may be numerous reasons for state policymakers to support
right-to-carry laws, but the belief that these laws reduce crime should
not be one of them," said Kovandzic and Marvell.

The study is published in the Aug. 14 issue of the journal Criminology &
Public Policy.

Huh?

But the researchers concluded that concealed-carry laws also allow a
larger number of potential criminals to obtain permits, as well.

Since when have criminals been concerned with legal carry?

This is moronic, obvious drivel and not serious research.

"potential criminals"??? What's that? People who they think may commit crimes? Did the precogs from "Minority Report" help them write this moronic research?

Males? Ethnic minorities with greater representation in the prison population? Socccer mommies? White, yuppie Yankee males with advanced degrees who are into marital arts training, including firearms?

As I heard a Southern lawyer say, "this will hold up like a cardboard suit case in a thunderstorm." (I say, I say):D

El Tejon: "...who are into marital arts training, including firearms?"

Marital arts training? Can I assume your wife has attack-modes, as does my wife? ;)

"Potential" criminals?

Does that not include the entire human race? Is he concerned that Humans might have access to arms?

And this

"states that allow citizens to carry concealed weapons"

The state allows rights. Hmmm. Interesting phrase. The state will tolerate freedom? Uh-huh. Yeah right.
