I looked this up in a few places but couldn't find an answer.

In Ohio, or anywhere else, can a person over 18 but under 21 have a handgun on their private property, specifically one they, say, bought with their father while still living at home?

I am currently 16 (live with my parents of course) and have a few firearms, no pistols, that my father has purchased, that are sort of "mine", I payed him back for them, I shoot them with permission and carefully, I take care of them. Ditto for ammunition. I will be 18 or over when I leave the house, so I will have no problems with my long guns.

If I were to "buy" a handgun to learn to use and enjoy in the backyard, not to mention the fact that things only get more expensive, and I probably have more free cash now than anytime soon after, could it go with me when I leave the nest, legally? Or would I have to take it with me out of the closet after my 21st birthday party?

Obviously, I could not purchase ammo for it, or carry it, at all. But could I legally have it as "mine", in my home?

EDIT: Similar circumstances, if my twin brother were to get a Hi-Point Carbine in 9mm like he is considering, would that be legal to possess on private property above 18, under 21?

In Ohio, it is perfectly legal for you to open carry a loaded handgun at the age of 18 or over. When in a vehicle, however, the gun and the magazines must be unloaded (without a carry permit, which you can't get until you are 21).

However, it is illegal for anyone to furnish you with a handgun by any means until you are 21, in Ohio. So, if you are in possession of a handgun, the question will be how was it legally transferred/given/sold to you?

An example of legal possession of a handgun by a person between 18 and 21 in Ohio would be a military member stationed in Ohio who brought their gun with them from their previous state, or a person who moves to Ohio from another state and brings their gun with them.

The applicable Ohio codes are:
http://codes.ohio.gov/orc/2923.21

and vehicles:

I do not have one, and it looks like all my questions are answered. Thanks.

what about this part?

"except for lawful hunting, sporting, or educational purposes"

You need to finish that sentance:
"except for lawful hunting, sporting, or educational purposes, including, but not limited to, instruction in firearms or handgun safety, care, handling, or marksmanship under the supervision or control of a responsible adult"

Bold added by me. I can let my minor child shoot all the guns in the safe, as long as it's under the suprevision or control of a responsible adult.

I don't think that whether or not I could shoot and care for any gun was the question, I was really asking if I could have a handgun in my home below the age of 21. It appears the answer is no, question solved.

You are absolutley correct. I did not intend to imply that you could NOT shoot or care for the gun. I was merely trying to point out that the "lawful hunting, sporting, or educational purposes" clause is not sufficient for someone under the age of 21 to be able to obtain a handgun in Ohio. I apologize if you took that as an affront. That was not my intention.

Oh no, I wasn't insulted at all. I actually meant to edit the post, but remembered I had to work early tomorrow, now today, and went to bed. I was agreeing that the clause Ok'd my shooting with my father, but, as you said, "that the "lawful hunting, sporting, or educational purposes" clause is not sufficient for someone under the age of 21 to be able to obtain a handgun in Ohio".
