I recently picked up a HK Import Benelli M3, so Bambam-31, Beetle Bailey and myself went out to the range for some trigger time. Of course, gotta complete the first step to bringing a new shotgun

When we first got there, Beetle Bailey was on the firing line shooting Slugs at 7 yards to see where the POI was using his bead sight on his 870 Police. It shot pretty dead on, at yards, but he noted that it shot slight right about 1-1.5" at 25 yards.

The distance was too short at 7 yards since the wad made holes in the target too, so it was a little difficult to tell which was the slug and which hole was made by the wad.

My target was the middle one using Federal 10 pack slugs/M3.

I brought some Winchestter Buckshot also, but my shot at 25 yards patterned pretty wide. I was going to retrieve my target, but we got sidetracked since the clay range opened up.

Kind of a crappy picture, but we were also shooting slugs at steel @ 100 yards. mine sighted in using the white dot of the front post. So the top half on the round steel was enough to make hits on the steel.

A usual tradition for us would be to play some games of "Big Chip, Little Chip" on the clay station. This time, Beetle Bailey brought out his 870 Police Magnum, and left his 870 TB 30" at home. This was gonna be fun, I brought my M3 to play with, so we could play Big Chip, Little Chip with riot guns. This is gonna be interesting. I ended up leading the bird using the top half of the rear aperature. Made consisitant hits with it.

Down on the pistol range, we were also allowed to shoot the 100 yard ram and pig using slugs. Let's go hunting!

With regards to the Benelli M3, there are some things to note.

* The gun cant be loaded into the magazine unless the hammer is cocked. So you'd have to rack the bolt for the shell lifter to clear so you can load rounds into the magazine.
* The gun is very well fit and finished. I was impressed with the almost flawless finish of the bolt. It was barely fired from what I could see.
* Flawless function
* I got the Benelli thumb. Pinched as I loaded rounds into the magazine. I tried Robert Hairless' tip on loading rounds into the chamber, but I'll have to review it again.
* Take-down to clean is much more complicated than the 870s I'm used to. The bolt breaks down into 7 pieces itself.
* Clean shooting! I broke it down after the range trip, bolt was still pretty clean... the barrel was the only thing that really had to be cleaned. And that just consisted of a wet patch, and a quick scrub of the brush.
* Trigger isn't nearly as crisp as any of my Wingmasters. Light, but mushy trigger

Now, there is one peculiar thing to bring up. In pump mode, I would load the round into the chamber, then try to load rounds into the magazine tube. But there was resistance to get rounds into the magazine. Swapped to auto, and the rounds went easily to the magazine. Weird?

Next, my magazine clamp would shoot loose and work it's way up the barrel towards the front sight. Blue loctite ok to use for the mag clamp screw?

Overall, it's a fun gun. It recoils hard using slugs, but worked flawlessly. The manual of arms is a little too complicated for what it needs to be. But, this is gonna be a range toy, something to shoot other than my 870s.

I even got a sling for it. A Specter Gear 3 point sling that was specific to the Benelli M1/M2/M3 shotgun. Good quality, easy to mount and use. Since it's just going to be a fun gun for the range, I don't have my usual reservations against slings. I plan to have some fun with this gun.

Cool concept of a shotgun, and fun to shoot. Only gotta do the last step.

Thanks for reading.

Nice write-up! Cool pics of our weekend shoots. ;)

Funny how our collections of pistols and rifles allowed a bit of a rotation each week, but we kept bringing out the same boomsticks (me w/ my Beretta 3901, you and Ken w/ your Wingmasters). No longer, eh? Now I've got me my very own Wingmaster, Ken's got that Police model, and you've got that Benelli.

We gotta do a 18-20" barrels only weekend....

The Benelli was a neat gun for shooting slugs since, other than having my support hand a little further forward than I'm used to, it's just like shooting a rifle. I only shot it in semi-auto mode, but I didn't personally find the recoil to be a concern. Loose mag-clamp notwithstanding, the M3 seems very solid and well put together, and I can see the appeal.

Note to Dave McC. I know my 870 Police doesn't yet exhibit the necessary wear (only been shot 600 times) but I've only had it a few months and my 870 Wingmaster TB is still my preferred dance partner for my range trips.

We gotta do a 18-20" barrels only weekend....

Okay. How's next weekend? :D

If Mike can swing it, I'm down for next weekend. We got a lot of range time to make-up from our short hiatus.

A shorter barrel shoot would be fun. No more full chokes, or 28-30" barrels to play "Big Chip, Little Chip." And no more of Ken running a box full of clays before we get a chance to shoot. :D

How loud does the steel ring at 100yards when a slug hits it? Gonna consider having the Benelli ported? I might do it to one of my shotguns one day.

There is a guy located somewhere in the area of triple B trap range that does them, can't recall the name. For some reason I have always wanted a 10gauge, I will probably end up with a single shot one due to price, I got to keep the recoil down on it any way I can think of!

I love shooting that 100yd steel, did it last time with a .223 T/C Contender.

My Franchi 612 riot gun recoils rather severely too due to weight, IIRC around 7lbs and might need something like porting. I'm more of a pump guy anyways. Care to shoot trap with my folding stock Rem 870 marine magnum or my S&W 3000 folding stock?:)

Another fun trap option and definately something I want to do someday is a "duckbill" type choke modification, saw limited use in Vietnam. Makes the shot spread horizontially.

The steel doesn't really ring all that loudly compared to a rifle round, but it does shake quite a bit.

We were shooting 1 oz. slugs and the box said 1600 FPS. Richard was using Federals and I was shooting Winchester. The nice thing is, it takes a little bit longer for the slug to hit the steel at 100 yards then it does, say a .30-06 round, so you can hear it a bit more clearly since the sound doesn't get mixed in with the noise of the muzzle blast.

Thanks for posting this, guys. Definitely improved my day. A couple things....

First, anyone MUST check with the RO before using slugs on pistol silohuettes. They can destroy some targets, especially the big Brenekkes.

BTDT.

Second, using your defensive shotguns recreationally greatly improves proficency. As well as adding those all important wear marks.

Awaiting your report on a 18-20" barrel clays mission.....

Thanks Dave,

I did request permission from a RSO to shoot at the 100 yard Ram and pig. They were cool with it as long as we weren't shooting slugs at the hanging sillhouettes. :D

Shorter barrel session, up next.

That Benelli has had me intrigued ever since I first saw it advertised. I have yet to get my hands on one, but maybe one of these days. I usually take along my defensive 870 (20" rifle sighted barrel, Knoxx Spec Ops) when I go to the Clay range, and shoot a few clays with it. Gets lots of interest from the other shooters. I hit with it about as well as anything else. Unfortunately one of the ranges that we frequent doesn't allow any guns with less than a 22" barrel.

Looks like a fun time.

Good report. The fit and finish on the Benelli's is the best I have seen.

I really enjoy shooting my M1 S90 HK import. I did pretty well shooting clays with it last year at the THR get together. Skeet was fun too although it was my first time.

I have about 400 rounds through mine and have never experienced Benelli thumb. I did load a shell in the magazine backwards once when I was wearing gloves and of course it jammed.

Well, aside from some initial adjustments to different sights (from beads to rifle sights and/or ghost rings), the 18-20" clay busting mission was a smashing success. Granted, the clay machine at Angeles Shooting Range is placed all of one yard in front of the shooter, and it launches clays at pretty much the same angle and elevation every time. Nevertheless, there was little drop off in our weekly clay-bustin' w/ the shorter barrel lengths.

I learned two things:

1) My Wingmaster is noticeably more comfortable now that it sports a Limbsaver. :p

2) The Knoxx SpecOps stock on the Express knocked me pretty good in the face. Gotta find me a recoil pad I can velcro on to my face....

While breaking clays with a riot gun is interesting, I'm starting to miss doing it with my Wingmaster. Today the Police model got all my clay breaking duties while I hammered (with the RSO's permission) the steel targets @ 100 yards with slugs and a 20" rifle-sighted barrel on my Wingmaster. I can't, for the life of me, figure out how to break clays with rifle-sights or ghost-rings. I can only do it with a bead.

For kicks, shot more slugs out of the Benelli today and got a 3" group at 10 yards (five shots). The gun could probably do better if I kept trying, but it's more fun to hit the steel plates than it is to shoot paper, especially since it isn't even my gun.

I had the same problem when I put a Spec Ops on my 870. The fix turned out to be real easy. I just lengthened the stock. The bell was whacking my cheek. The first time I took it out it looked like someone had punched me in the face. Since then I have fired thousands of rounds with it and no more sore face as long as I keep the LOP a little longer.

Ah, I see. Will have to try that next time out.

My strong-side molars are in your debt, sir. :p
