I recently posted to find out who had the best 22 rifle. After reading and some hands on, I decided to go with a CZ 452 Lux.

My next question is that I want to get my 10 year old a new bolt action to upgrade from his single shot youth model. He is going to start shooting in 4-H competitions and they require you use a bolt action with open sights. Most people say that they use CZ's. The Lux model fit him pretty well, but was too heavy. I think the cz scout model will be a hair to small since he has those on and off growth spurts.

What is out there to choose from that has good accuracy out of the box? The CZ Basic has caught my eye. What are my other choices?

Too heavy as in too front heavy (barrel to far out there) or just plain too heavy overall?

If it is simply a matter of the barrel being a bit to long get another CZ with a shorter barrel. IIRC the Lux has a pretty long barrel.

Too heavy at the barrel. Lux has a barrel that is almost 25". The Basic has a 21" barrel. Is it the same action as the 452's? Will it take the same magazines?

Viking;

Yeah, the basic would certainly be a viable selection. You might also want to consider the Savage MKII. It's decently accurate and has both an adult and youth stock available. You should be able to accommodate any growth spurts between the two stocks.

I had a MKII, but sold it to finance the CZ452 LHB. I'll get another one if I decide that I need a loaner LHB.

Viking, Do you mean they require "open sights" (notch/post) or "iron sights" (open or aperture)?

If apertures are an option, Savage is making a Mk2 with target sights now.

In that case, I recall CZ makes an open iron-sighted version of the 452... some sort of Euro style stock. The tangent sight's made like the military Mauser sight, but IIRC it's graduated from 25-200... don't recall whether it's in yards or meters. Otherwise an old single-shot JC Higgins, which is what I learned on, would work. They're not the purtiest rifles out there based on the cosmetic appearance, but they're my recommendation based on good experience.
