Sort of Gun Related.....Why Is Tannerite Legal(Unregulate)

I have never handled Tannerite, but have seen it shot. From what little I understand it is a very stable explosive compound that when mixed requires an impact (bullet strike as example) to detonate.

So why does this stuff seem so un-regulated? Not that I am a huge fan of the governenment getting involved with every little thing it just seems a bit ridiculous to me that I can legally acquire an explosive compound relatively easily but I cannot lower the sound signature of a firearm a few decibals or friggen air rifle for that matter without bending over, smiling like a shark, singing the Uncle Ernie song and coughing up $200 bucks for the privilege.

I think it has something to do with the stability of the unmixed components. It does not require the rigerous storage procedure of standard explosive compounds because of this.

I'm not sure what sort of procedure you have to go through to possess it, as I have never ordered any, but the website seems to require some sort of official process...

Go to the BATFE website and you'll quickly discover that laws regarding explosives are complex. But in a nutshell, owning certain types of explosives for personal, non-commercial use it not illegal unless state law prohibits it.

Also, the base ingredients of tannerite (ammonium nitrate and a proprietary oxidizer made by Dan Tanner) are both perfectly legal substances. They don't become explosive until mixed.

Once the components are mixed, however, the BATFE's explosives regulations do apply. Among other things, transporting mixed tannerite, trying to sell mixed tannerite, or charging someone else a fee to shoot at it are all illegal.

Why Is Tannerite Legal, unregulated

The components of Tannerite are stable and do not present
the problems of, say commercial dynamite, which can break
down over time (worse if exposed to extremes of heat or cold)
and become dangerous just to move. Tannerite must be
mixed and struck solidly by a highpower bullet to explode
and has little use except as a target material (noise at a
shooting range is not a problem and the target area of a
shooting range should not present collateral damage problems).

It cannot readily be used for any terrorist or criminal purpose,
heck, it cannot really be used for any commercial use that
explosives are normally used for either. So far Tannerite users
have been self-policing like ultralight aircraft users and there
is no real need served by regulating Tannerite.

95% of the laws on the books are useless and could be repealed
with improvements to public safety.

If you order some it comes with a DVD explaining and showing you just how stable it is...even when mixed.
They light it up with a MP5
They stick a fuse through the middle of one half pound target
they even stick a blow torch under one and it just melts away

You have to shoot it with a Centerfire rifle round, the only rimfire that will set it off is a .17HMR

Very cool stuff....Daniel Tanner is a great guy and will hook you up if you buy in bulk. We mix up 5lb targets.....sit back @ 300yds....and enjoy the show. With targets that big you can see a shockwave travel across the desert floor
