I have permits from 2 states that do not have reciprocity with South Carolina but do have reciprocity with Georgia. I am going to Georgia first, then to SC. I read the laws and know I can transport it in a closed compartment in a vehicle In SC, which I will do. I know I can transport from the car to my hotel room at night, and back.

Can I legally transport it from my rental car to the airport check in line in my checked luggage?

Reciprocity typically deals with concealed carry - if all you are doing is going from your car to your hotel room, I would not think that to be a big deal; carrying concealed in SC is a different matter

How about in luggage from the rental car drop off to the airport check in?

Call the Attorney Generals office in SC and ask. I asked a county solicitor (prosecutor) who said you can carry loaded pistol in the glove compartment. (Not legal advice, just my experience).

As has been stated though, reciprocity deals with concealed carry rather than transport during travel (except in NY I believe).

Reciprocity deals with concealed carry, and if your permits don’t have reciprocity you essentially have no permit in the state. You should follow standard transport protocols for people in the state who don’t have carry permits (ie unloaded, in a case, etc). Generally if you have the gun cased in such a way that is acceptable to the airline, you’ll likely also be conforming to state transport laws and should be fine carrying it from the car to the check in desk.

I would recommend against calling police or DA offices. They are under no obligation to give you a legally binding opinion, and odds are if they aren’t gun people, they’ll get it wrong even if they do try.

Look at handgunlaw.us - they usually have good summaries of each state’s laws.

I actually got the police called on me in Charleston several years ago because another motel guest spotted my revolver that I was taking from my car to my motel room. The police was very nice and said that technically by having it in the open as I did was considered "open carry" which is not legal here in SC. He suggested just putting it in a suitcase or since I did had a conceal permit, to put under my jacket which did make a lot of sense. As far as the airport goes, I agree with HamSlamma. I would call the airport security office and get advice from them.

Thanks everyone. I just didn't want the very last part of my trip messed up by having to chat with police officers over something like this.
