Hey Studs,

I was on a popular ammo site and I found some supposed Speer Police 147 grain Gold Dot HP LE 9mm Luger +P.
I can't seem to locate any ballistics or intel on them.

Can anyone here share any experience or information about performance...etc, etc?
Did Speer ever produce a 9mm 147+P JHP round?

Not saying I'm correct but those looks kinda like reloads to me, the bullet looks different with the ring all the way around it. And Speer Gold Dots I've ever seen has had "silver" primers when they are loaded in nickel cases. Plus wouldn't the case be stamped +p on it if it truly was +p ammo.

Again not saying I'm correct at all, but just the way I see them.

I agree with LS1... I don't think those are factory.

What kind of box did they come in? Speer currently only catalogues a 124grn +P, but that is not to say they didn't kick something out on their LE line.

The other thing, +P loads are usually with lighter bullets, not heavy-for-cartridge bullets like a 147grn is in the 9mm.

Edit to add: I thought the pookie in the HP was also suspect, but that is a feature of their G2 bullet, I guess it would be similar to Hornady's red tip CD bullet. They still don't catalogue a 147grn +P, but I was surprised to see a 230grn .45ACP +P. The picture is not good enough for me to see if that ring around the bullet is part of the construction.

Verdict: They might be legit.

9mm Critical Duty are 135 grain +P, there are a few +P semi auto loads out there that are heavy-ish. :)

I have zero experience with Gold Dot loads other than two boxes of .30 Carbine rounds I picked up during the Obamascare several years ago. If the nickel cases have any scoring or lengthwise scratches on them then I’d guess they were reloaded. If not, they could be factory leftovers from a special run made for a large buyer somewhere.

Stay safe.

Your ammo looks correct if it came from a box like this:

It is NOT +P and the primers are the correct color for this duty ammo. The bullets also look correct...looks factory to me and matches exactly the duty ammo I was issued.

Te GB listing does no say +P and Dr505 ID-ed the ammo

Are you sure those are +p rounds? The add listing doesn't say +p and that is the throw off. Speer does make LE 147 gr in regular pressure with the plugged G2 bullet. I just can't find any +p

Here is why the current listing in GB doesn't reflect them being +P, he was integrity-driven & edited it rather swiftly. Herein is his reply to me:

Hi!

Thanks kindly for your questions, your research, and especially for sending your references.

I do indeed think you are right about these rounds being #54226, and I have therefore edited the description of the item to reflect your very valuable contribution.

As the description states, I purchased these as bulk “police-return” rounds from Recoil Gunworks, and thus there was no factory box or packaging when I received them.

As for your question about how they shoot, I have no experience.

I have never shot any, and thus have no chronograph data, or any penetration testing information, from them.

Thanks again for your contribution!

Sincerely,

John

"Te?" You mean The?
Here is why it no longer shows +P...he edited it after I contacted him.

Here's what the list shows today.
law-enforcement-loaded HP hollow-point Gold Dot Speer G2 elastomeric tip 147 grain handgun

...
Muzzle velocity is 970 fps, with muzzle energy of 307 ft/pounds
That's what it says under Item Description so I'm assuming not +P. Looks like nice ammo though.

Yep...he went bk in asap and edited the +P & ballistics. You can read his reply a couple of replies above in this thread.
I'm sold on Underwood 9mm 147+P JHP @ 1125 FPS & 414 Muzzel Energy!
