What do people think about various sporting autos as an alternative to an M1A in the role of the main defense / survival / practice rifle?

Specifically, I am considering a Browning BAR and H&K SL7 (with a Remington 7400 a distant 3rd), all in Win 308

The criteria are as follows (in decreasing importance order):

- reliability & ruggedness. Have to be able to trust my life to it. Reliable extraction/ejection/feeding/ignition. Has to be able to last me for a few decades (1500 rounds/ year or so), replacing a barrel once is ok though
- servisability. Cleaning doesn't require a PhD in proctology (M1A has an issue here - can't clean from breach to muzzle). Parts and mags generally available. Aftermarket sights, triggers and barrels to experiment with - a plus
- accuracy. Doesn't have to be match-grade, but 2-3 MOA and good shooter in the field, not just on the bench. Should be easy to hit with. Better accuracy wouldn't hurt (esp. if it's not at the expense of the reliability), but is not a must-have.
- political correctness. Don't laugh. By this I mean something that would be less likely to be banned/confiscated/outlawed by the well-meaning marxist politicians. Sadly, we are likely to get one in the White House soon and regardless, the whole establishment is moving to the left. So, I think the AR15 and FAL clones have a big disadvantage here - "scary", "military pattern", "mean-looking" (and other such liberal nonsense) rifles. The sporters, esp. the SL7 look far less menacing to the marxists (while the M1As have a historical value, and the Garands - even more so)

I would appreciate your opinions regarding these (as well as any other alternatives for under $2K).

Many thanks,

JP
