BigBL87’s thread prompted this and I don’t want to hijack it.

I’ve spent the last several years upgrading my optics. Started with scopes, then binoculars and last was a good rangefinder. It’s now time for a spotting scope and I’ve never owned one. Looked through a number of cheap ones. It will not be used for hunting. If I ever go elk hunting again I’ll cross that bridge then. My hunting never entails shots over 350 yards so my binoculars are more than adequate.

All I want to do is see bullet holes on white targets out to 200 yards. Smallest caliber will be .223. How much money do I need to spend to accomplish my goal?

In good light i can see .22 holes in white with my larger scopes. Ill see if the athlon can do it, tho I expect it can. i can see the grid for the dog guard on the house a few streets over.
holes in black are harder, im pretty sure I cant do it with the athlon.

Ill try get to Maunakea this weekend and see.

I wouldn't have been offended by a hijack, just for the record. :D

I don't have a long enough range to say for sure, BUT like Loonwulf I'd say I'd guess the Athlon would be capable. The other one(s) that kept popping up in the $200ish and down price range were Konus.

This one that Walkalong shared in my thread seems like a killer deal.

With how big it is, you'd just need to make sure you had an adequate bipod. The one that came with my Athlon was fine, but I'm glad I upgraded after my moonwatching test of it the other night. I'm looking at binoculars now, and finding my big head (76-77 mm interpupilary distance) really limits my options, especially in the budget end.:( I think a rangefinder will be my last one as well.

I have a Redfield Rampage Spotting Scope 20-60. I can see 223 at 200 yards but struggle at 300 yard. My eye sight isn't great either. I paid 260 for mine but it has gone up a little https://www.opticsplanet.com/redfield-rampage-20-60x80mm-angled-spotting-scope-kit.html Came with a mini tripod and little soft case. I tried a few others all at the same time. I found this to be the best buy at the time . the better ones come with ED or HD glass. the one I have does NOT have the better glass.

I have a Pentax PF100ED for sale if interested...huge scope...huge, but under the right conditions I can see 6mm holes in the black at 500 and in the white out to 600. If interested PM me.

I was just about to repeat my, “buy used and get more” mantra.

I’ve never looked through a Pentax scope but everyone who’s owned them rave about them and when I see them come up for sale on the used market they don’t last long. If I were you @cdb1 , I’d think seriously about this offer if the price is in your budget
