That'd be a really nice idea.

I'm also waiting for the Sig P220 in 10mm. Sooner or later, they'll see the light. :)

So what does it take to make a .45 into a 10mm? Take a .45ACP barrel blank and ream it out to the correct bore for a 10mm? Different recoil spring? Or a whole new slide?

Tex

Problem with converting a .45 to 10mm is the breechface and extractor are slightly different (smaller diameter case and all).

So can one take a .40 slide and slap it on a .45 frame? All you have to do to convert a .40 is have the chamber recut and put on a heavier recoil spring (but you have to do this in a .40 pistol that can handle the longer cartridge ... so most .40 pistols won't work unless they were based on a .45 pistol. This is why its pretty easy to convert .40 1911s to 10mm)

I believe the slide on the .40S&W is narrower than the slide for the .45ACP variant, so that would be a no-go.

Okay, I've been thinking about this thread on and off all weekend. I've only had a cursory interest in the 10mm, but an XD in 10 would change that completely.

I'd buy one right now, I guess I better send a letter to Springfield.:)

Well, I've got a Witness full 45acp size that will take the 10mm slide and barrel. I've got a Witness Elite Match originally in .40S&W that EAA sent me a new 10mm barrel for (after I gave them the serial #) and they delivered it to my door 72hours after I ordered it. AFIK any 40 S&W pistol can be adapted to 10mm as long as the magwell will take cartridge lengths of 1.260" the bore is still .400 you just have to build it tough enough to take up to 40,000 lbs of chamber pressure.
The CZ clone built by Tanfoglio of Italy and known here as the Witness is one such strong healthy pistol. I see no reason why the XD couldn't be its equal.

I got a response to my email:

I will pass on your suggestion and thank you

Has anyone checked if a 10mm round fits in the 40 magazine? EAA has this covered, but I'd prefer an XD also. If that hurdle is gotten over, the rest is relatively easy if the likes of Wolff offers stouter springs for the XD and the slide cycles open enough.

A slide/mag conversion kit would be awesome, but 130 sales (I signed the petition as no. 130) would fall very short of making the tooling investment worthwhile. A conversion of the 40, if possible, is a much more viable alternative. And only viable if, and only if, the magazines would work and the slide opens long enough for the 10mm round. If that works, the rest is a simple process of creative machine work.

Folks with 40 XDs, please contact me and I'll send you a 10mm round for a magazine fit check if there is truly that much interest in making the conversion. Or hit up your gun store, my favorite store pulled some 10mm ammo off the shelf for me to check on some 40 cal pistol I can't recall at the moment. It didn't work, suppose that's why I can't recall it.

I'd happily purchase an XD if it seemed feasible. Heck, I purchased a S&W CS40 with that in mind, but more research (after the purchase of course) revealed that alloy frames don't stand up the the 10mm round and the rails wear out in ~1k rounds. :(

FWIW you apparently can convert a G21 to shoot 10mm by swapping the barrel out, not sure about the mag. In other words, no extractor changes needed. The smaller diameter isn't great enough to cause problems.
