I've been curious about these conversions for a few years. I finally traded my way into an Alaskan 44.....
I know that Bowen makes some absolutely beautiful GP and Anaconda barreled Alaskans, it looks like he can also make a full custom profile.

I've heard that Huntington also does some. Allegedly he made a SRH with Dan Wesson style barrels.

Is there anyone else I should check with? The thought of converting to 45 Colt with an Anaconda barrel is intriguing. If you have a rebarreled SRH, please post pics and share your experience.

They are relatively low pressure so it shouldn’t be too horrendous. Like 35,000 vs the Casull @ around 60,000

Do I want to know what a .500 Linebaugh feels like out of a SRH?

Recoil was pretty stout considering it’s light-weight. The two loads I ran most was a 500 grain bullet at just over 1,200 fps and a 525 at a hair over 1,100 fps. It was very accurate and accounted for some memorable game to include moose and black bear.

That's the reason I ask.

I much prefer the .480 Ruger to the .,454 Casull in the Alaskan so was curious which it bore more resemblance to.

Just spoke with Mr. Huntington about getting a rebarrel. He is waiting on some quotes from an EDM shop, so he asked that I call back in a month. I finally got the pistol to the range and I was really happy with it. I'm having a tough time deciding on keeping it .44mag or going to .500 JRH.

He did some work on my blackhawk. Very happy with the outcome. His price/turn around time was excellent. Asked around here and @MaxP and @CraigC recommend him, so I gave him a try.

That’s an easy one - .500 JRH! :)

I'm a fan of .44 and .45. I will also likely never kill anything more sturdy than a feral hog with it. Today, I shot over a hundred rounds of .44 through the Alaskan and my 629. It was enjoyable and relaxing. Will I be able to do that with the .500 JRH? Jack said that I load some low velocity .500s that would be easy to shoot, but "easy" is a relative term...
I'm not afraid to admit that 240gr @1400fps is all I want out of that 629 for a few dozen rounds. The SRH is a little more forgiving.

Well, pressure is relative. Saying that pressure level is 357 Mag territory can be misleading when 325-400 gr bullets are being used as opposed to 125-180 gr.

It is. My .500 Linebaugh Super Redhawk was a fairly vicious recoiling revolver. Granted, it would have been more pleasant to shoot had I loaded it lighter, but I’m a full throttle kind of guy.
