Looking for the best AR I can buy at around the $1200 range (street) - I was looking at some of the Colt Competition rifles but after reading some reviews I was turned off. The Stag 3g looks nice - any other models I could be considering? This is going to be *my* rifle, the wife and son can use the other AR's in the safe. I have no real "must haves" other than it can shoot full pressure 5.56.

IMO: The Stag 3g couldn't be built at home near as good for the same money.
My son bought a Stag last fall, and being an old died in the wool Colt AR-15 man?
I was very impressed with his Stag, for less money.

I have heard many good things about stags and the 3G in particular. I agree about the 'cant build one as good for the same price' comment. You might take a look at the Daniel Defense DDM4v7, even though it's MSRP is $1500 I have seen them for just over $1200. It's at the top of my AR list right now for my first purchase. Also the S&W M&P15MOE Mid. As you can tell mid-length is one of my important features. YMMV.
I picked up a 3G upper a year or two ago and I feel that the upper was a very good deal. The cost to build a similar upper, with a matched bolt and with a headspace check was a wash, so the 3G was a no-brainer choice.
I didn't feel that the complete rifle was as good a deal at that time, so I just swap lowers when I need to. I don't recall how much the complete rifle was at that time though.
I really like the 3G upper. It hovers around 1 moa at 500 meters with 53 grain vmax bullets. My best group has been five inches at 500 meters and that is pretty decent for me.

Good buddy of mine who I shoot 3 gun with has one. It's a really sweet rifle and you get a ton of gun for the money. All he did was throw a Burris tac-30 on it.
