Recently, I noticed my Star Model P (.45ACP) trigger was stiff during a trip to the firing range. In retrospect, the trigger pull was about 15 to 20 lbs. It seemed that one rd. didn't go off, but after I looked, the hammer was still cocked.

What could I possibly do to lighten up on the trigger pull?

Thanks.:)

It sounds like there's more wrong than just trying to lighten up the trigger pull.
Something in the safety, disconnector, sear and spring department maybe.
Full disassembly and inspection is probably in order.

If I read you right, Gun Master, the stiff trigger pull is something that just cropped up, not something that has been there all along. If so, something is certainly wrong with that gun.

Concur.

I had a Norinco 1911 on the bench once that had developed an awful trigger after some use. The sear was literally eating into the hammer hooks. I replaced the hammer. The sear looked fine. The gun's owner didn't have any more trouble. I assumed that the hammer was soft, but I never tested it.

I never experienced that in a Norinco, but soft parts are pretty common in Spanish guns, so it would be a good idea to check the full cock notch for a depression caused by hitting the hard sear. That would certainly increase the trigger pull weight. Also, if you didn't buy the gun new, someone might have tried to do a trigger job and cut through the case hardening of the hammer or sear.
