I was watching the "Jim Zumbo Upgrade" episode of Ted Nugent's "Spirit of the Wild" show on the outdoor channel yesterday and was very curious about the steel falling plate targets Ted and Zumbo were shooting at.

Ive seen Bianchi style horizontal rack targets with a rack of sever or eight falling round targets arranged on top of the cross bar that when they are all hit can be manually re-set by pulling a cord from behind the firing line. Ive also seen horizontal racks with round steel targets that hang below the bar and which swing up when hit and stick there until a "release" target is hit and releases them all.

The one Ted had was different. It was a rack of eight round steel targets arranged ON TOP of the crossbar. Each bank of four were three regular round steel falling targets and a somewhat larger/longer "reset" target that when hit would reset the other three by lifting them UP. Ive never seen an auto-reset target system with the steel targets on TOP rather than hanging beneath the crossbar, and especially not one designed to be shot with a rifle.

I very much want one of these things. Anybody have any idea who makes these and how to get them? Any idea what a rig like this costs? I don't believe its a custom job, though I suppose thats possible.

I have a rig like that for rim-fire only. I bought it at wally world some years ago for @ $40. It has 4 swinging targets and 1 reset target. It works great for .22, but would be destroyed by larger calibers. I have seen adds for heavy-duty rigs, but they were more expensive (I think over $100).

Something that you might look at is called a "dueling tree" this is a vertical post with swinging targets. When you hit a target it swings around to the other side. I think that these are cheaper than the horizontal rigs, and if you can weld, you could probably make one easily.

edit: found this sight on google.

No, I've seen the flimsy Wal-Mart type rimfire falling plate targets and the "dueling tree" targets as well. I have no interest at all in these.

I'm definitely talking about a heavy duty rig meant for full power FMJ rifle rounds. These have 6"-8" steel plates and the crossbar sits 4' or so off the ground.

Yeah, Ive seen those as well, they work by some kind of magnet holding the swinger up until the release target is hit, but these are hanging targets.

I want the very specific type of target i saw, which is a horizontal rig with steel rifle plates on TOP of the bar and which are RAISED UP when the reset target is hit.
