I'm seriously considering the STI Trojan 5.0 in 9mm as my first 1911 pistol. My question has to do with whether to order tritium 3-dot night sights or stick with the fiber optic front sight + black adjustable rear sights. I like 3-dot sights but I focus so hard on the front sight that I wonder if the regular Fiber Optic sight that everyone seems to use on this gun might be sufficient. This will pretty much be a range gun. Any input appreciated!

For a range gun a fiber optic front with an all black rear is a great combination. The front sight will draw your eyes to it and there aren't any distractions in the rear. I have a few guns set up that way. Mark

Agreed, fiber optic front and stock STI adjustable rear, it's what I use in my Trojan 9mm. Tritium sights work better only in low light situations. I run my STI with the Recoilmaster guiderod, it came with the standard one piece, picked the recoilmaster off a prize table at a USPSA match last spring. By all means get a Trojan 9mm with the F/O front sight.

Railroader/Jed: Many thanks for your advice - sounds like a plan. Jed - do you find the Recoilmaster helps with the 9mm recoil on the Trojan and for follow-up shots?

Thanks again.

I have been very happy with the Dawson Precision FO front sight I put on my Ranger II. My experience has been that if it is dark enough that the FO isn't visible, it is dark enough that I cannot see the target.

I have factory Tritium sights on my Springfield but it's got to be pretty dark before you can see them. I'll be putting a FO front sight on my 22 plate gun.

Thanks for the input - it sounds like a FO front sight is the way to go. Now, I just have to decide on a 5" Trojan or the Longslide 6" model. The 5" is more logical, as the 6" is illegal for IDPA, etc.
