Stinger Pen Gun

It's my understanding that a pen gun that can be fired when it LOOKS like a pen is an AOW (Any Other Weapon) under the NFA, which means it has to be registered, you have to pay a transfer tax ($5, I think), and your Local chief LEO has to sign off on the purchase. However, American Derringer is/was making a pen gun which has to be bent in the middle to fire (this drops the trigger), and, since they don't LOOK like an innocuous object when they're ready to fire, they're treated the same as any other handgun under federal law. HTH
 
I like how both of the above pages consider this a "back up" weapon. I can' t imagine any situation in which you'd have time to go through the steps of getting this thing in fire mode.

They're a major security risk for prisons, courtrooms, airports (and airlines), and other places where firearms are forbidden. The darn things are almost impossible to identify at a distance, as when clipped into a pocket, they look just like a pen. I've actually seen one taken out of a pocket and put into a tray, along with wallet, keys, etc. as a guy went through a metal detector: and even with the whole thing in plain sight, the LEO's present did not identify it. (Unluckily for the guy concerned, I did identify it - loudly! - and it led to his arrest. He was trying to visit an inmate in prison, and who knows what damage that thing could have done inside the security zone?)
 
I wouldn't mind having one but I'd obviously never try to use it for defensive purposes. Great functional conversation piece though.
 
I tried to get one. I told my dealer about it, showed him the website and the article in Small Arms Review (I think) and never heard anything more about it. My local gun dealer is far more interested in talking about cowboy action shooting than he is about making money. :barf: This isn't the first and I am sure it isn't the last thing that I "ordered" and never got.

Local shop has the .22 Stinger pens for sale. Kinda neat, but I personally wouldn't buy one. I can conceal a NAA .22 LR mini just as easily, and have five shots instead of one.
 
They look neat, but if I was going to spend the money on that, I'd just spend a little more and get a real pengun. At least those only have a $5 AOW tax instead of the $200 for everything else.
 
The problem with the AOW guns is recoil. I've seen some GRIM pictures of people who tried to shoot tear gas pens that had been modified to run on .22 LR instead of rimfire teargas blanx.

Apparently it's HARD to hold onto those things without a real grip. If you're sighting over it to aim, and it squirts out of your grip when you fire it, where do you suppose it ends it's rather swift rearward journey?

A beefy steel pen to the eyesocket at speed is generally fatal.
