Stumbled On A Speed Six

I completely forgot about those details! It is a .38 Special only gun with a ~2.5 inch barrel (I need to measure it). Someone worked on the trigger because it is possibly the best I have ever seen on a revolver in both double and single action.

I have a .357 version in stainless. On a whim I put reduced power gp springs in mine, and low and behold, they work.

I radiused the trigger and knocked off some of the sharp edges. It is one of my favorites now.

I was at a local shop yesterday and came across a decent Speed Six. Serial number range puts it in the 1981 build range. I'm taking it to the range today so hopefully I will have an update here soon as to how it shoots (maybe some more pics too)!

I would be THRILLED to find one in .357.

I have a Ruger Security Six in .357 and it has a 2.75" barrel and shoots better than I can.

Even with magnum loads.

Enjoy and shoot the heck out of that baby, and consider converting it to .357 or ??.

Well... it shoots well (I do not however). Only one minor issue and that is how sharp the hammer is. I'll have that worked on later. Targets were shot at 10 yards. First one is single action, second one is double action.

I may have it reamed out for .357 later, but I honestly don't shoot much of that these days.

Good stumble! Were it mine I would look for a grip adapter (try BK Grips) and call it good.

BK does not make a grip adapter for that gun. I have already asked. The owner did send me an email about a year later and said one adapter he offers may fit the "Six" series but I don't remember which one it was. But Tyler T-Grip does make an adapter for them.

I would so carry that. Being a left-handed shooter, I favor the cylinder release on the Ruger because it's the easiest to actuate with my left trigger or middle finger. I've been frequently carrying a 1990s vintage stainless 3-inch Taurus 85, kind of a "poor man's SP-1010."

Nice buy. I happened upon a stainless 357 Speed-Six at a local gun show a couple of years ago for only $350. I picked up a nice Security-Six a couple of years before that.

The Dash 6 series of Ruger DA/SA revolvers are classics, too bad Ruger Replaced them with the cheaper to manufacture GP series, although the GPs are solid guns as well, the Dash 6s are more "svelte" IMHO.

Great find! I had a stainless Speed Six in .357 and it was my favorite fall/winter time, back-woods revolver. I went with Pachmayr grips on all of my Ruger Six Series guns.

The only thing I can't figure out about used Speed-Sixes is why anyone would sell one! I found two, both 3-inchers and both .38 Special, and both reamed out to take .357. Because they were reamed out, they both became very accurate in the process. I can drop .357 jhp bullets in the chamber and they catch in each chamber. It's not uncommon for one or two to drop out, which is no huge deal, but it's a nice touch.

I've been thinking of having one of them nickel plated.

Go with chrome. Harder and hardier. Use "search" and look up Mahovsky.

Maybe not. I have an excellent condition security six .357 with 2.5" barrel and it has an amazing trigger. It has not been fired much and I doubt it has been apart. It has really turned me onto the idea of finding a 3" speed six or less collectible security six because my 3" gp100 is not doing it for me.
