Ok here is the criteria.
Wooden rifle stocks...not lacquored shiney.
At least .223 or larger.
Semi-Auto
Easily scoped but not meant to be a match rifle.
Recoil not an issue but forearm weight is the lighter up front the better.
Must be reasonably attractive.

The scope is only to allow the shots to be seen out to 100 yards max and most likely 50 yards and pin point accuracy is not paramount.

Best thing I can come up with is this SAR with laminated stocks.

Well have at it. Everybody likes to suggest things.

Let's limit prices to say $1000ish and under, preferably under.

Thanks
Chris

How about one of these $700 Bushy's:

I like my SAR-1 though. With the Red-Dot, it's not too inaccurate. ;)

I was thinking something along the lines of the SAR-1 even before I saw your link. . .;) . Hmmm. . . maybe an FN-49 if you can find one in the caliber she likes? Scope mounts are kinda pricey, though. You might still be able to go under your budget. She has to have a wooden stock, huh? Don't get me wrong, I like wooden stocks too, but that does limit your choices. HTH and let us know what you decide on.

Oh, okay. I didn't know that the Dragunov looking thing qualified. Get it. She'll love you ;) . BTW, 7.62x54r is a bit bigger than .223 rem, if that matters. Good luck.

Uhhh just a tiny bit. :what:

Like I said recoil is not an issue. Her favorite giggle gun is a Beneilli Nova 18.5inch barrel loaded up with 3.5inch magnums.

Yes she is crazy.

I'm kinda wary of recommending them because they have such a bad reputation for customer service (but I got a Mosin Nagant recently from them with no problem, YMMV) but www.interordnance.com sells the Romanian Dragunov-style rifle for about $700 but I just checked their site and they are sold out but expect more in February. I could be wrong, but I believe that is for a NIB one. I would love one but I love living in California more  .

If you want a "his and hers" pair - how about the Saiga with 20" barrel and wood furniture in .308? They retail for a bit over $300 in this neck of the woods, and are well-made and surprisingly accurate. They have the standard side scope rail. For details, see here.

SVT 40, The SSG97 is just a lengthened AK design, supposedly that wont perform well with heavier weight bullets. The SVT is a robust firearm, the Germans used to carry them in favor of their rifles, decently accurate and has an adjustable gas system. The magazines for the SSG97 range in price from 40 dollars to over 60 dollars, whereas for the SVT the magazines go from 100-150 dollars per for original and 60 or so for reproductions. I have heard great things about the SVT and am planning on getting one this year. Good luck Slingers P.S. the rifles run about 400-800 dollars with original snipers going for 1250+, a company makes a repro mount and scope that slide on the rail for 545 dollars.

Some attractive wood furniture for FALs. Here's an example (wood is available on other models beside the stupid Cali version):

Wood stock, easily scoped and .223 or above, to me says Ruger Mini 14.

Some people cuss at them, but a guy I knew had some custom work done to one and shot it well in High Power Rifle Matches.

Here is my new Valentines day toy. I like to think of it as the Garand's little sister. It is reasonably short, already set up for any scope options I could want and is very cool.

Thanks for all the input and I will give a range report when I can get out to shoot her.

Jules

Here is the new M1A Scout

You know, looks as though you are desribing a mini-14 or mini-30,

Chris and Julie,

What are you guys doing next weekend? I'll be picking up my new Rem 700 PSS on Friday and plan to take it out for a test run. If you'd care to join me, by all means, do. I'm considering Hobson Pike since they have a couple 200 meter lanes. Or, we could do Owl Hollow if you'd prefer. I have to turn in my membership application out there anyways. Drop me a line if you want to join me.

Frank

Good choice on the M1A Scout!

That covers this year. But there's next year, don't forget. ;)

(Still fits the original criteria in the thread, especially the "attractive" part)

Beetle Bailey, see my new signature! Please help all of the rest of us in the "free states"! PRK seems to dictate and influence the laws of states outside her bounderies. We've got to crush her evil grip on our liberties!!!!

Since she's sweet on the Dragunov, how' s about an SKS [Yugo] dropped into a fiberforce stock???[or no fiberforce if'n you hot on the wood]
By droppin' in into the synthetic, you'll get the Dragon look, without the dragon price!!!
Bigger than .223!!!:scrutiny:

GEWEHR98,

Is that a Browning BAR that I am looking at? It is gorgeous. I suggested the BAR and similar hunting style rifles. I actually like the Super VEPR by Robarms since I have a VEPR II that has been spectacular. The AK by HK is what it feels like.

Part of Sheslingers criteria was that it also had to be evil enough and both the super VEPR and guns like the BAR were just too boring and sedate for her. Heck she has already stated that the 10 round magazine we got with the M1A looks too neutered. :D

Chris

Yup, it's a Belgian BAR.

Mine's in .30-06, polished and blued steel receiver w/ French walnut furniture (vintage 1969), but they also are available in .243, .308, and larger/longer rounds. Browning makes a lightweight version with alloy receiver, and a Stalker version with black synthetic stock and matte finish. I haven't seen aftermarket 10 or 20-round magazines for them, but I know the Army bought a few that used original 1918 BAR magazines for a McMillan-stocked .300 Win Mag countersniper as modified by Arms Technology, Inc. ;)
