I recently bought a suppressor in .22. I was thinking about getting some subsonic ammo to shoot with it when I read that standard supersonic .22lr in a handgun will be subsonic because of the short barrel. Will .22 ammo which is supersonic in a rifle be subsonic out of a six inch pistol barrel? I plan to have my .22 rifle threaded for the suppressor but right now I am using the .22 can only with my two Smith and Wesson 2206s.

Thanks,

It's not a hard and fast rule, but most ammo out of .22 pistols will be subsonic due to the short barrel. I think the cutoff is about 5-6", so you might be close.

Either way, supersonic ammo won't harm your suppressor. It just makes a sound like ripping cloth, instead of a "pfft", at least with my Gem-Tech Outback II suppressor.

I've had excellent luck with CCI Subsonic ammo and my suppressor. Remington Subsonic's good too, though it's a little bit dirty out of my 10/22 (I'm left-handed, so that probably exacerbates the problem of getting residue thrown at me a bit).

Winchester Dynapoints are subsonic out of my 10/22's 16" barrel, cheap (about $10.92 from Wal-Mart for 500, if you can find them. A bit pricier from other vendors -- either way, it's cheaper than $25/500 for CCI or Remington subsonic), and reliable. I just bought a 5,000 round case of 'em and love it.
