Got this knife a while ago. Keep it near the basement door (walk out basement) where I exit to cook on the gas grill and do yard chores. Use it for basement tasks like opening boxes and various things. Cutting open packages of things to be cooked on the grill. Kept the knife clean, but it rusts. I clean it and it rusts again. Oil it and it will rust. Just surface rust. Sometimes I forget it, and leave it outside. Its under an overhang, but rain can still get at it.
Last weekend I took it apart, cleaned the blade (surface rust on the pivot point), then painted it with Aluma-hyde from Brownells. Let it dry just a bit, then cooked it in an old toaster oven that my wife said to should throw out. I didn't, just moved it to the garage. Moved the oven outside. Hung the knife from the rack. Cooked at 350 for 30 minutes while I mowed the lawn. Opened the over door after mowing the grass and let it cool. Later on it was dry to the touch and not tacky.
I let it sit in the basement all week til yesterday. I sharpened the blade, mostly to remove the paint at the edge. With the edge now shiny, I put it back together. First problem. The blade doesn't go in and out as easy as before. I didn't see that as a big problem. I lubed the joint, worked it and it got better. It still wouldn't go in fully since the pointy end of the knife has less of a gap to enter and the knife was now thicker due to the paint. I took the knife apart and placed a stainless washer on that end to add some space there and now its perfect. It opens easy, but doesn't fall open. Its a handy knife for certain chores. And now it has a bit of rust protection.
