I just picked up a model 96 swedish mauser, my first one. The rear receiver was drilled for target sights but the sight wasn't included. One of the holes has a portion of the screw in it the other hole doesn't. Is there a problem safety-wise in firing the rifle? Should I place a screw in the empty hole? Also I will search but does anyone know of a type of replacement or original sight for this rifle that might fit in the same mounting holes.
Thanks
Dan

Unless they buggered the job, there should not be safety problem WRT tapped screw holes for receiver sights.

They put different kinds of sights on the Swedes. If it was a common sight (Lyman, Redfield, etc) a local gunsmith might be able to determine just for which sight the holes were tapped.

The Swedes did use some oddball (to us here in the US) sights.

A couple of places to perhaps hunt down the oddball sights:

SAMCO used to carry some of the Swede sights.

There were at least two types of receiver sights used by the Swedes, IIRC.
