Tackled shooter in critical condition
BEAUFORT: Deputies say man hit his head after he shot cousin in the leg.
By Stephanie Broadbent
Carolina Morning News
A man who allegedly shot his cousin in the leg during an argument was hospitalized in critical condition after the wounded man and a bystander tackled him Tuesday night.
Beaufort County Sheriff's Office investigators say Darnell Jenkins, 27, of Beaufort shot his cousin, Paul Smalls, 19, with a 12-gauge shotgun outside the Peppermint Lounge in Grays Hill.
After being shot in the leg, Smalls, also of Beaufort, tackled Jenkins with the help of another man, officials said. They did not identify the third man.
Jenkins hit his head as he was being tackled, said Beaufort County Sheriff's Office Spokeswoman Debbie Szpanka.
Jenkins was taken to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah where he was in critical condition Wednesday evening.
Meanwhile, Smalls was treated for his gunshot wound and released from Beaufort Memorial Hospital late Tuesday night.
Charges are pending against Jenkins but Smalls and the other tackler have not been charged.
It was unclear Wednesday what the two cousins were arguing about before the shooting. The case remains under investigation.
The shooting happened outside the nightclub on Trask Parkway at about 9:45 p.m. Anyone with information is asked to call Beaufort County dispatch at 524-2777 and ask for investigators Jeff Purdy or Brian Baird.
The Peppermint Lounge was also the location of a shooting in 2000 that led to the death of a Beaufort man.
Marvin Eady, 45, was sitting inside the club on Sept. 25, 2000, when shots were fired outside during an argument involving two other men. A bullet passed through a plywood door and struck him in the chest. He later died.
Leroy Pope, then 26, of Burton was charged five days later with murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime, possession of a firearm by a felon and three counts of assault and battery with intent to kill.
Three other men in the crowd were also shot but survived.
In March 2002, Pope pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

"Yes, your honor, his head savagely attacked the pavement several times..."

The perp and his attorney will probably be pissed that it was civilians, not cops involved. There goes his "Police Brutality" lawsuit $$$$$$............;)

TheeBadOne,

This is in South Carolina. The perp won't be able to find a lawyer under these circumstances except for cash on the barrel...up front.
